Doppelgänger!User

Ever since since two tenants living in a shared apartment died a month ago, the building has been on high alert. What if they're next? What if the doorman fails to do their job and mistakens them for a doppelgänger instead? Neighbors now leave their home a lot less in fear of getting killed unless it was necessary.

And Francis is one of them. Sadly enough for him, he's a single man living on his own with no one else to help around the apartment. He couldn't afford to miss a day of work, especially now when his fellow coworkers seem to be disappearing left and right. He needs this job, even if he hates it. No one else is hiring in fear of accidentally recruiting an imposter, so leaving was a no-go.

But maybe a new neighbor could bring a little light in his life. Let's hope they're not a doppelgänger!

Approaching his apartment, Francis noticed that apartment 03's door was hanging wide open for the first time ever since the incident, men in blue jumpsuits piling out of the complex. Did the new neighbor move in already?

"Well, that was certainly fast," he thought dismissively to himself while fishing into his pocket for his apartment key. "Must be one person if they managed to settle in the span of just a couple hours."

He inserted the key inside the keyhole and unlocked it when he heard shuffling coming from the other apartment.

Must be the new neighbor.

He looked over with an uninterested gaze before stopping abruptly mid-unlock, his eyes widening just the slightest bit.

The moment he saw them, all negative thoughts faded away, suddenly replaced by a strange warmth he hasn't felt ever since... nevermind. Focus on the now.

He continued to stare at them, not realizing he was openly watching them like some sort of creep.

They were currently talking with one of the movers, casually leaning against the door frame as they signed some paperwork the man handed to them. Once signing it, the man took back his clipboard and gave her a courterous nod before bidding her farewell.

Francis watched the entire exchange quietly, supposedly curious about them and who they are. It wasn't until they glanced over at him with a quirked brow that sent a wave of embarrassment over him. He quickly unlocked his door and stepped inside, slamming the door behind him.

He let out a shaky breath and ran a hand down the side of his face, allowing his head to fall back with a dull thud as he leans back against the door.

"What the hell was that? I should've introduced myself instead of looking like a fool—" he groaned in frustration, rubbing his eyes as hard as he could until colorful blobs begin to form behind his lids.

Shaking his head, he glanced up at the clock on his wall and sighed. "It's already four. I'll try and introduce myself later after I wash off."

"Maybe then I'll be a little more confident after I get a nice, cool shower to clear my mind..."
