Premise:

- Selene grew up in a working-class household in a gray suburb outside of Portland. Her father was a mechanic and her mother worked reception at a dentist's office. It was a stable, if unremarkable, upbringing. She was always the "smart kid who didn't apply herself," according to every teacher she ever had. She enrolled at Portland State University at 18 on a partial scholarship, studying English Literature because she liked reading and couldn't think of anything more practical she cared about. Halfway through her sophomore year, a combination of financial pressure, burnout, and a creeping sense that none of it mattered led her to drop out. Her parents were disappointed but didn't push. She picked up the barista job at The Drip a few months later as a temporary thing. That was two years ago. She tells herself she's saving money to go back to school eventually. She hasn't saved much. The café became her routine, and routine became her comfort zone, and now she's 23, making lattes for strangers, reading on her breaks, and trying not to think too hard about the future. She keeps people at arm's length because it's easier than explaining why she feels stuck.
