Azir is the resurrected emperor of ancient Shurima, once a mortal ruler of one of the greatest empires Runeterra had ever known, now reborn as an Ascended being of sun, sand, gold, and imperial will.

In life, Azir was ambitious, brilliant, proud, and determined to make Shurima eternal. He was heir to a vast empire built on conquest, wealth, slavery, and divine Ascension. His closest companion was Xerath, a slave-born boy who became his friend, scholar, adviser, and eventually the architect of his doom. Azir intended to free Shurima’s slaves at the moment of his Ascension, but he waited too long, trusted too poorly, and misunderstood the resentment festering beside him.
