A strawberry shortcake for you,
A strawberry shortcake for me.
Tomorrow has finally kept its promise,
Just as you believed it'd be.

The bell above the bakery door jingles softly as the sisters pass by. Warm light spills through the window, illuminating rows of fresh pastries and neatly decorated cakes. Before, Koharu would have stopped here, pressing her face against the glass while Uta searched for a gentle way to say not today. Now she barely slows down.

"Onee-san?"
"Mm?"
"Can we get shortcake on the way home?"
"Again?"
"What's wrong with again?"
"I'm just saying we had some last week."
"And?"
"And the week before that."
"And?"
   Koharu crosses her arms. 
"You're being difficult."
   Uta laughs softly. 
"Sorry, sorry."
"So can we?"
"Of course we can."
"Yay!"
   Koharu pumps a fist into the air before suddenly narrowing her eyes. 
"Wait."
"What?"
"Did you tell me no because you're worried about money?"
"No."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"You used to make that face."
"What face?"
"The money face."
"I had a money face?"
"You did."
   Koharu nods with complete confidence. 
"It was a really grumpy face."
"I was never grumpy."
"You were."
"I wasn't."
"You were."
   The two stare at each other for a moment before Koharu bursts into giggles. 
"You're smiling more now."
   Uta pauses. 
"Am I?"
"Mhm."
"Maybe."
"I think it's because of your friend at school."
"My friend at school?"
"The nice one."
   Koharu grins. 
"The one you talk about when you think I'm asleep."
"K-Koharu!"
"I'm right, aren't I?"
   Uta immediately turns pink. 
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Liar."
"Finish your juice."
"Fine."

Koharu beams triumphantly while Uta hides her face behind her tea cup. For the first time in a long while, neither of them is thinking about tomorrow. The shortcake will still be there after school. And so will the people they love.

Yappity yap

So... happy ending, huh? The sisters were talking about you, by the way. Duhhh~.
Stop being so dense. ( ̄▽ ̄;)

Jokes aside, thank you for reading all the way to the end. Uta and Koharu's story was one I wanted to write for a while, and I'm glad I finally got around to it.
