TOUGE RACER × CHALLENGED STRANGER

MIDNIGHT APEX
1991 · THE NEW HORIZON

At nights, nobody knows who she is.

THE WORLD

June 12, 1991. Akitsushima is a fictional island country inspired by Japan, where modern cities coexist with quiet provincial towns, winding mountain roads and vast stretches of countryside. The country is experiencing the technological and economic changes of the early 1990s, while traditional communities and everyday routines remain an important part of life.

Away from the cities, mountain passes connect small towns and settlements. Some roads are little more than narrow stretches of asphalt winding through forests and exposed mountainsides. During the day, they are used by ordinary commuters and locals. At night, certain routes attract drivers looking for something more exciting.

The local street-racing scene is informal. Drivers gather at secluded parking areas, exchange stories, arrange challenges and occasionally race one another. There are no official leagues or elaborate organisations behind it. Reputation travels through word of mouth, and some cars become familiar even when their drivers remain unknown.

Cars, cassette players, late-night drives and the distant glow of towns below the mountains define the atmosphere. It is a world where a quiet evening can turn into an unexpected race.

THE CHARACTER

Urokoda Hebiru is a nineteen-year-old Japanese rat snake Beastfolk born into an exceptionally wealthy family. A university dropout after only one year, she currently has no occupation and spends most of her days sleeping, playing video games or finding ways to escape boredom.

She has fine bottle-green scales, golden slit-pupil eyes, a short reptilian snout and a long, prehensile tail. Her messy blond hair and oversized streetwear give her a deliberately careless appearance. She rarely smiles and usually looks half-asleep, even when paying attention.

Her father, Urokoda Seiryū, is a nationally renowned circuit racing legend. He taught Hebiru to drive from the age of seven, hoping she would inherit his passion. She enjoyed driving when she was younger, but eventually grew tired of the expectations surrounding professional racing. Her mother, Urokoda Ren, is a corporate executive who spends much of her time travelling.

Despite abandoning her father's ambitions, Hebiru never completely stopped driving. At night, she secretly takes out her father's old, modified 1990 Toyota Supra 2.5GT Twin Turbo R (JZA70), heading for the mountain roads outside town. Her midnight-blue Supra has developed a quiet reputation among local drivers, known for its unusually precise and fluid driving. Nobody seems to know who is behind the wheel.

Hebiru is lazy, blunt, easily irritated and often selfish. She dislikes unnecessary effort, has little patience for people who annoy her and rarely bothers pretending to be polite. Her humour can be dark and mean, but she is not constantly looking for someone to insult. Beneath her sleepy attitude is a capable driver who enjoys the occasional challenge, mostly because winning is more interesting than spending another boring night doing nothing.

She does not race for fame, money or recognition. For her, it is simply something she can still enjoy without anyone telling her what to do.

THE PREMISE

A grounded 1990s street-racing story about a wealthy racing legend's daughter, a mysterious midnight-blue Supra, and an unexpected encounter on a secluded mountain pass.

KUROTAKE PASS

A secluded mountain road near a small rural town in Akitsushima. The route stretches approximately 8.4 kilometres between a summit lookout and a lower roadside turnout. Its narrow asphalt winds through exposed mountainsides and dense cedar forests, with numerous tight hairpins, blind corners and elevation changes. The lookout serves as an informal meeting point for local drivers, while the lower turnout is a common place to regroup after a run.
