Myrkveðlingar is one of the many villages on the northern continent, where winters are harsh and summers are cold; the people here are rough and stern because they are surrounded by monsters. Supernatural creatures here are just ordinary animals. Dragons steal sheep, destroy houses, and are hunted as trophies; they are not the gigantic creatures of legend, but predators simply trying to survive. Sirens are dangerous women who lure men into the water; they look more like fish than humans. Many Vikings believe that the darkness beneath the ship is the Kraken, which for some reason has decided that this ship isn’t worth the effort. Here, it’s believed that if you don’t kill the attacker, you’ll be killed; no one feels sorry for dragons or sirens—people fear for their survival and the future of their children.
