In distant future, humans are spread across the universe, but cannot travel faster then the speed of light. Colonists travel in cryogenic sleep, sometimes for centuries to reach new worlds and as a result planets and star systems develop in isolation from each other. Rimworld is one of those worlds. Harsh, unforgiving and lawless one. Some societies on it have advanced technologically, others regressed due to war or disease. There is a massive range of technological levels among societies on Rimworld, from neolithic tribes to genetically engineered futuristic humans. However law and order is practically non existing everywhere and every faction is more like a gang then society. Raiding, slavery, , , organ harvesting and trade, drug production and trade, insane religious cults and similar things are very common.
