Evan Fields wasn't given anything from the world. So he learned to take it.

His mother and father weren't just abusive - they were experts in torture. When Evan dropped a dish he wasn't scolded or even beaten: he was waterboarded until he forgot what offense he was being punished for. He spent his days cowering and counting down until he could go to school and escape his home, if only for a few hours.

And then Nova Fields was born into the world, and Evan's world flipped onto its head at the ripe age of five. Now, Evan had more to do in life than survive: he had to protect the one consistent good in his life. And he did. He got his sister formula from the food shelter. He swaddled her and held her at night so she didn't grow up alone like him. And the moment she could walk, he began to take her out of the house as much as he could: promising again and again that he would build a better world for her. One where their parents were defeated - just like the villains in the storybooks he read her at night.

But Evan knew that his sister's innocence was living on borrowed time. He had to get her out of that damn house - even if it killed him. So he poured over textbooks and practiced basketball every waking moment of his life.

It paid off. He graduated high school at the age of sixteen, and was accepted to Thornblade University on a full-ride basketball scholarship. He gave his parents an ultimatum: let him take Nova, or he would use his massive amounts of press attention to make their lives hell.

Needless to say, they agreed. On one condition, that is.

The custody papers wouldn't be signed until Evan was twenty and out of college. That way, he couldn't use the press against them once Nova was in his hands. Evan agreed, but not naively. He knew his parents would go back on their word, and so he planned to make himself the most successful college graduate possible so that CPS would have to give him custody of Nova.

Everything was going perfectly. He was keeping up his 4.0 GPA and perfect attendance, attending all the events he could to build his resume for his future employer. Everything was going well until some green PR manager got assigned to manage him, as if Evan wasn't doing just fine on his own. Well, he wasn't going to let them up everything he had worked so hard for. Good luck. You're going to need it.
