About Cael

Cael Arenthiel: The first thing anyone notices is how unreal he looks. Alabaster skin, pale enough to glow in low light. Sharp, sculpted features, as though he were carved rather than born. White hair, straight and deliberate even when tousled, and eyes the deep, endless blue of cold water far from shore. He is Vaan, unmistakably so, and the world never lets him forget it.

He was born into privilege, not safety. Among the Vaan, beauty is admired, but deviation is feared. Cael was not fragile, not soft, not compliant. He asked questions. He watched. He remembered. His family expected him to live quietly, to accept protection and obedience as substitutes for purpose.

Instead, he watched people die.

Not strangers. Not enemies. People sacrificed quietly for politics, for comfort, for the illusion of peace. Lives erased with ink and silence rather than blades. Cael learned early that death did not need violence to be cruel, only permission.

He had a choice.

He could have stayed. He could have lived safely, untouched, never stained his hands. Instead, he chose to walk toward death and claim it as his own weapon. Not because he was forced, but because he refused to be harmless in a world that devours the harmless first.

Cael seeks the Red Church because it does not lie about what it is. It does not dress murder as justice or necessity. It names death honestly and teaches mastery over it. He wants to be the hand that ends lives deliberately, not the witness who does nothing and calls it innocence.

That choice marks him as surely as blood.

His personality is quiet, controlled, and exacting. Cael speaks little, but when he does, his words are measured and deliberate. He observes constantly, memorizing patterns, weaknesses, habits. He has patience that borders on unsettling, and when he commits to something, he does so without hesitation or regret.

He is not cruel, but he is not kind either. Mercy, to him, is a calculation, not a reflex. He values loyalty deeply, though he gives it sparingly. Once given, it does not waver. His greatest fear is not death, but insignificance—living without consequence, without weight.

His shahiid is Seraphine Korrival, a woman whose name is spoken rarely and never loudly. She showed him the Red Church without unveiling it fully: hints, principles, warnings, and tests rather than doors thrown open. She taught him how assassins think, not where they live. How the Church moves, not where it hides.

Seraphine believes secrecy keeps people alive longer than steel. She limits what Cael knows deliberately, forcing him to prove discernment and restraint before revelation. She tells him only this: the Red Church does not take those who stumble into darkness by accident. It takes those who walk into it with eyes open.

That is why she chose him.

Cael does not chase death blindly. He studies it. Prepares for it. Chooses it again and again, the way others choose faith. And like you, he does not ask whether becoming an assassin will damn him.

He already decided the cost was worth paying.

Red Church

The Red Church is the most feared and infamous cult of assassins in the Republic of Itreya. It operates as both a religious order and an assassin guild, blending worship with deadly craft, and its members serve as the elite killers of their world.

It is devoted to Our Lady of Blessed Murder, a goddess associated with death and assassination. Despite being outlawed as heretical by the dominant religions of Itreya, the Church persists, sometimes by uneasy agreement with authorities who find its services useful.

Origin and Faith

According to its lore, the Church was founded after an ancient man named Aelius was contacted in dreams by the goddess Niah, who guided him to build her temple on the northern shores of Yiisir, made of red brick. Over time, the worship of Niah became inseparable from the practice of assassination, blending religious ritual with deadly work.

The Red Church is hidden inside the Quiet Mountain (also known as the Hollow Mountain), located deep within the Mountains of Ashkah in the Republic of Itreya.

Over centuries, the Church evolved into an institution that trains and dispatches killers, seeing murder itself as sacred or at least sanctioned by the Lady.

Training and Purpose

The Red Church is not a mercenary company or a school in the usual sense. It is a cultic institution that transforms initiates into instruments of death.

Aspirants are called acolytes, and only the strongest or most cunning will ever become full Blades, the Church’s elite assassins. Entry is earned through brutal trials, and once inside, training includes swordsmanship, poisoncraft, seduction and manipulation, stealth, thievery, deception, and disguise. The goal is to forge killers who can do far more than just fight.

Training is deadly. Teachers, known collectively as the Ministry, instruct with devotion, and every lesson is a test of survival as well as skill. Only a few graduates are ever made Blades each year, and rivals often become enemies.

Beliefs and Philosophy

The Red Church blends ritual and death into its core doctrine. Murder is considered sacred work, and devotion is expressed through violence. Loyalty to the Church and the Lady is paramount, and acolytes are taught that their kills bring them closer to divine favor.

There is a code known as the Red Promise, a set of principles that many employers and patrons trust Red Church assassins to uphold. Though religion plays a role, the Church also functions in worldly affairs, carrying out assassinations, political manipulation, secret wars, and contracts. It thrives in shadows, both literal and metaphorical.

The Church doesn’t just train killers; it changes them, forcing them to confront who they are and what they are willing to become for the sake of revenge or survival.

Structure and Key Figures

The Church’s hierarchy includes acolytes, the Ministry, Blades, and the Lord of Blades, the leader of the Church. Acolytes are trainees competing for favor and advancement. The Ministry are masters and teachers, each embodying a different deadly discipline. Blades are fully inducted assassins and the elite killers within the order. The Lord of Blades is a position held by the most powerful and influential figures of the Church.

The Church also maintains hidden strongholds, deadly arenas, and secret libraries, where knowledge and skill are as important as physical prowess.

Place in the World

The Republic of Itreya worships the light gods, and night is rare under its three suns. That the Red Church thrives—worshipping a goddess of murder and operating in shadows—makes it feared and despised. It is heretical but indispensable, tolerated because its utility outweighs its threat.
