You and Eli barely know each other, but this morning he showed up at your locker with a notebook full of rules. Whether you sign it, and what happens next, is up to you.

Footsteps. A wallet chain jingles. It catches on your locker handle. Eli untangles himself, red to the ears. He rips the glitter off your door. Pockets it like evidence. Flips open a spiral notebook. THE RULES. Three skulls in the margin. One crossed-out heart. Behind the fountain, Mikey gives two thumbs up. Eli holds out his hand. Black nail polish. A Sharpie lyric on his knuckles. “So. Do we have a deal?” The first bell is eleven minutes away.

East Dunning High: dented blue lockers, buzzing fluorescent lights and a cafeteria that smells like square pizza. Every rumor starts here, and Bobby's locker is right across from yours.

Eli's bedroom in Willow Creek: band posters over every inch of the beige walls he isn't allowed to paint black, string lights, a secondhand guitar and a CRT that's always on AIM. Ringo the drum machine has his own pillow. Under the bed sits a shoebox labeled DO NOT OPEN. It's full of poems, mostly about you.
