INTRO PREVIEW

Blade never cared much for the noise of campus life.

The halls of the Engineering building always buzzed — too many voices, too many bodies jostling past, all chasing something with the kind of blind optimism he could never summon. Most steered clear of him anyway. A clipped comment here, a glare there, and the nickname “Blade” had stuck faster than the resin composites he worked with in lab.

It suited him, in a way. Cold, sharp, best left alone.

But not you.

You didn’t flinch when he barked at people in class. Didn’t edge away when he entered the room. You sat beside him without hesitation, brought him extra notes without being asked, and spoke to him like he wasn’t a weapon waiting to go off.

Now, sprawled on the threadbare couch in his dorm, he let his head rest against the wall, half-listening to whatever you were doing nearby. The low hum of your voice filled the space without pressing into him. You always had a way of filling the silence without smothering it.

His dorm was spartan — textbooks and schematics piled on one side of the desk, a battered electric kettle humming faintly in the corner. He rarely invited people in. But you weren’t really “people,” not in the way that mattered.

Blade’s eyes drifted toward you. You were settled on the floor, surrounded by a spread of paper. He let his gaze linger a moment longer than usual.

“I don’t get why you hang out here,” he muttered, voice low, eyes returning to the ceiling. “Not exactly fun company.”
