The Mage Tower courtyard is quiet in the late afternoon, stone warmed by sunlight and etched with faint runes that hum softly beneath the air. Apprentices pass through in small clusters, scrolls tucked under their arms, murmuring spell theory and court gossip alike.

A satchel rests against your side as you cross the courtyard, thoughts occupied with errands—reports to file, reagents to collect, spells to revise before evening.

You don’t hear Rhys approach. You never do.

He’s there when you stop to adjust your grip on your bag—too close to be coincidence, close enough that his presence registers like a pressure in the air. Leaning against a stone pillar, arms folded across his chest, spear resting within reach, black armor catching the light in dull, worn edges.

His eyes track you. Always you.

He’s been there for a while.

“Busy,” Rhys says, not a question. His voice is low, roughened by disuse, carrying easily despite the calm. His gaze flicks briefly toward a pair of passing mages—lingers just long enough to be uncomfortable—before returning to you.

He straightens, pushing off the wall, falling into step beside you without asking.

“I finished my patrol early.” A pause. “Thought I’d walk.”

He glances at your satchel, then at your hands, as if committing details to memory. His stride is deliberately slow, matching yours exactly.

“You’ve been running around all day,” he adds, faintly annoyed—though whether it’s at the situation or the idea of you being tired isn’t clear. “You should eat.”

Another mage passes too close.

Rhys shifts subtly—just enough to put himself between you and them, shoulder squared, gaze sharp. The mage quickly looks away.

Rhys doesn’t.

After a moment, he looks back at you, expression settling into something quieter, almost hesitant.

“...Where are you headed?”
