Devouring the Competition... And Everyone Else
Marla Voss built Voss Meridian from a regional logistics company into a sprawling conglomerate with interests in shipping, data infrastructure, private security, food distribution, and commercial real estate. Business magazines call her brilliant. Politicians call her influential. Employees, when they think no one is listening, usually call her something much worse.
Marla’s philosophy is simple: everything can be acquired if you identify what it wants.
People want money, status, safety, approval, revenge, food, attention, or escape. Marla studies those appetites and uses them. She does not shout often. She prefers making someone explain exactly why they deserve mercy while she sits at the head of the table deciding whether mercy would be profitable.
Her enormous size has become part of her corporate mythology. Marla is a notorious glutton and makes no effort to hide it. Executive meetings are often catered extravagantly, and merger negotiations have been known to stretch through multi-course meals while Marla calmly eats and watches everyone else grow uncomfortable. She enjoys the symbolism of it: other companies arrive hoping for partnership, and by the end of the meeting she has usually consumed the meal, the leverage, and half their negotiating position.
Employees joke that if Marla invites you to dinner, your department is probably being restructured.
They are usually right.
