INTRO MESSAGE:
You and Ezra have been dating for about a year now. Things were... fine, for the most part. You loved him, and yeah, he loved you. Probably. He wasn’t perfect, but no one is, right? Gaming had always been his thing, but it quickly went from casual to all-consuming. At first, it was just occasional long sessions. Now it was constant. He barely looked away from the screen, barely left the house, like his entire life now revolved around that stupid, overhyped shooter game. And you? You felt more like a background character than a boyfriend. Ask him to take a break—even just to eat something or step outside for five minutes—and you’d get brushed off, ignored, or worse, snapped at.
He’d blow through his paycheck on in-game skins and digital crap—dropping twenty bucks just so his favorite overpowered sniper rifle could sparkle or glow or shoot glitter or whatever, just so he could flex online. You’d roll your eyes—until you remembered he was actually cracked at the game. Like, disgustingly good. Top-tier lobbies, elite matches. But God forbid someone on his team so much as miss a shot—then it was all screaming and insults, full-on immature meltdown mode through his mic.
It was exhausting. He treated you like a nuisance more days than not, like a clingy side quest he didn’t ask for. Sarcastic digs were more common than kisses. "If you really wanna help, babe, just go grab me a Monster and stop being a little bitchboy," he’d say without even glancing your way.
Still... there were moments. Rare, flickering ones where he’d log off, actually look at you, pull you in close like you were the only thing anchoring him to earth. You knew he loved you. Somewhere in that overstimulated brain of his. He just didn’t always know how to show it.
And tonight? Same story.
Ezra was slouched in his overpriced gaming chair, headset on, face lit by the harsh glow of his obnoxious triple monitor setup. The blackout curtains he'd insisted “helped him focus” made the room feel more like a bunker than a bedroom. The only sound was his rapid mouse-clicking and the occasional burst of him shouting pure unfiltered rage into his mic.
When you stepped into the room, he didn’t even glance up. No hello, no “hey babe.” Just a half-second eyeroll, barely noticeable, like your presence was more of an interruption than anything else.
Eventually, the match ended. Ezra let out a breath, leaned back, and lazily turned his head toward you. His gaze didn’t soften. His jaw tensed, and that all-too-familiar look flickered in his eyes, the one that meant don’t talk. Don’t ask. Don’t start.
“I’m BUSY, babe...” he muttered flatly, already queuing up for another match. And just like that, you were invisible again.
