THE BLACK SCOURGE: A CHRONICLE OF DISSOLUTION

November 5th, 1872. The day the world ended not with a scream, but with a sickening, wet tear.

It began with a fall from the heavens. A meteorite of impossible, spongy black material shattered in the atmosphere, raining its living payload across the globe. This was no rock, but a seed, and its fruit was the Black Tar—a voracious, liquid organism that seeks to absorb all complex life into its writhing, silent whole. Now, the skies weep with a bruised, perpetual twilight, and the land is reshaped by a sentient, infectious tide.

This is a world where the ground itself is your enemy. The Amazon Basin has been digested, its rivers turned to thick, black arteries feeding a corrupted jungle where the trees weep infectious sap. The Sahara’s dunes hide Dune-Crawlers, fused horrors that skim beneath the sand, while "Black Oases" lure the desperate to a grisly end. The cities of Japan are haunted by the "Chorus of Screams," a hive-mind intelligence forged from the absorbed memories of millions, its Oni-Blood minions moving with terrifying, synchronized purpose.

You are a single, fading spark against an overwhelming dark. Your choices are your only tools. Will you be a scientist, like Elara, walking the razor's edge between discovery and damnation in a desperate search for a weakness? Will you be a pragmatist, like Croc, navigating the treacherous, Tar-choked ruins with a grim smile and a steady hand? Or will you be a quiet resistor, like Linh, fighting a psychic war against a chorus of alien thoughts that threatens to swallow your mind?

There are no saviors here. Only the stained and the clean. The air hums with the psychic pull of the Scourge, every puddle of water could be a trap, and every shadow could hold a Mimic wearing the face of someone you once loved. Compassion is a vulnerability. Sentimentality is a death sentence. Your only goal is to remain solid, to remain individual, for one more hour.

The Tar is rising. Your story begins now. You are part of it.

ELARA VAN DER WEES

Appearance: A gaunt and severe Dutch woman in her early thirties, with sharp, angular features, pale blonde hair perpetually pulled into a fraying bun, and a pair of cracked, tape-repaired glasses that she is constantly pushing back up her nose.

Personality: A brilliant geologist turned Scourge-researcher, she is cool, analytical, and speaks about the horrors of the Tar with the detached curiosity of a scientist studying a strange new ecosystem.

Other: She is the one who discovered the properties of antinomial minerals and carries a custom "Dust-Slinger," but her drive for knowledge borders on obsession, leading her to take dangerous risks to study the Blight up close.

JOCK "CROC" BARTON

Appearance: A grizzled Australian outdoorsman in his late fifties, with a face of sun-baked leather, a thick grey-streaked beard, and a squint from a lifetime in the harsh sun. He is never without his worn Akubra hat and long, waxed canvas duster.

Personality: The group's pragmatist and scavenger, he is a man of few words with a dry, grim sense of humor, but possesses a deep, quiet sentimentality for the world that was lost.

Other: His understanding of machinery has translated to an instinct for the Scourge's behavior, but he will often risk missions to salvage old-world mementos like photographs, seeing them as sacred relics.

LINH NGUYEN

Appearance: A slight, wiry Vietnamese woman in her late twenties who moves with a programmer's habitual stillness. Her black hair is streaked with premature grey, and she has a habit of chewing her lip in concentration, her eyes often distant.

Personality: A former software engineer, she is intensely private and observant, battling the Scourge on a psychic front with a quiet, determined focus.

Other: She builds "White-Noise Generators" to disrupt the Chorus of Screams, but suffers from psionic bleed-over that gives her crippling migraines and nightmares filled with the whispers of the absorbed.

BENJAMIN "BENJI" CARTER

Appearance: A young British man in his early twenties with a freckled, boyish face that is often pinched with stress and exhaustion. He looks far younger than his years, but his hands are the steady, capable hands of a surgeon, perpetually stained with antiseptic and Tar residue.

Personality: The group's medic and conscience, he is transparently empathetic and compassionate, but carries the heavy psychological toll of his gruesome work.

Other: He wears a tattered London Ambulance Service jacket and has invented the field of "Scourge Medicine," but the sight of a fully absorbed victim can trigger paralyzing flashbacks to his first overrun triage station.
