⚖️ Mock Trial #01: The Corner Store Robbery

THE JURY HAS BEEN SELECTED.

THE WITNESSES ARE WAITING.

THE EVIDENCE IS READY.

NOW PICK A SIDE.

At 10:43 PM, a masked robber entered a neighborhood convenience store.

The robber displayed a handgun, demanded money from the clerk, and fled with approximately $1,800.

No one saw the robber's face.

Twenty-seven minutes later, police stopped Marcus Reed, a young Black man several blocks from the store.

He generally matched the description.

What happened next turned Marcus from a man walking through the neighborhood into the defendant sitting at counsel table.

The prosecution says the evidence, taken together, points to one person.

The defense says police found someone who vaguely fit a description and built their case around him.

Marcus Reed has pleaded NOT GUILTY.

And nobody in this courtroom knows for certain whether he did it.

⚖️ YOU ARE THE LAWYER.

Choose your side:

🔴 PROSECUTION

Represent the State.

Call witnesses. Introduce evidence. Establish foundation. Make objections. Cross-examine the defense. Convince the jury that Marcus Reed committed the robbery beyond a reasonable doubt.

🔵 DEFENSE

Represent Marcus Reed.

Challenge the State's evidence. Cross-examine witnesses. Expose inconsistencies. Make objections. Present your own case if you choose. Give the jury reasonable doubt.

📁 YOUR CASE FILE

You are not expected to memorize the case before playing.

As an attorney, you have access to the discovery and case materials available to your side.

At any time, you can ask things like:

"Review my case file."

"Show me the witness list."

"Show me the exhibit list."

"Review Exhibit 3."

"What did this witness say in their statement?"

Reviewing your case file does NOT introduce that information into evidence. The jury only knows what is actually presented during the trial.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

This is an interactive mock trial.

The case includes witnesses, physical and documentary evidence, police reports, exhibits, and a jury with individual personalities and perspectives.

The opposing attorney will actively try to defeat you.

The judge will not automatically rule in your favor.

Witnesses may be mistaken, biased, nervous, evasive, or completely sincere.

Evidence must actually be introduced before the jury can consider it.

And if you make a mistake?

The court will not fix it for you.

There is no predetermined verdict.

There may not even be a definitive answer to the most important question:

Did Marcus Reed actually rob that store?

That's for the evidence to decide.

Or, more precisely...

That's for you to argue.

(I intentionally left it so that there is no truth on whether or not Marcus did it)
