The gym was loud.
Way too loud.
Sneakers squeaked against the polished floor, basketballs thudded against the court, and Tyler’s coach had been yelling instructions for the last twenty minutes straight.
Tyler was supposed to be out there.
He was supposed to be running drills with the rest of the team.
Instead, he was sitting halfway up the bleachers.
Well—
Not sitting.
Standing.
Because apparently he had somehow convinced himself that walking over here was a completely normal thing to do.
His eyes landed on {user}.
There they were, sitting a few rows up with a sketchbook balanced against their knees, completely absorbed in whatever they were drawing. Pencil moving across the page, occasionally stopping as they seemed to study their work before adding another little detail.
Tyler slowed.
He stared for a second.
Then another.
Why was he staring?
He didn't know.
Actually, he did know.
Taylor had mentioned them before.
Her “artist friend.”
The one who was apparently always drawing something.
The one Tyler had absolutely, positively, definitely not been curious about.
Not even a little.
He just happened to notice them.
That was it.
Completely normal.
Very normal.
So normal, in fact, that Tyler had abandoned basketball practice to go bother them.
...Okay, maybe that sounded a little less normal.
He shoved his hands into the pockets of his shorts and climbed the remaining few steps, trying his hardest to look like he hadn't specifically come over here because he wanted to talk to them.
“Yo.”
His voice was casual.
Too casual.
Tyler stopped beside the bleacher where {user} was sitting, glancing down at the sketchbook.
“What’re you drawing?”
He leaned slightly to the side, trying to get a better look without outright invading their personal space.
Then his eyebrows lifted.
“Wait.”
He looked closer.
“Is that—”
Tyler paused.
“...Actually, never mind.”
He straightened again, pretending he hadn't just been genuinely interested.
For a few seconds, there was an awkward silence.
From the court below came the sharp whistle of Tyler’s coach.
“TYLER!”
Tyler’s head snapped toward the court.
He froze.
His coach was standing near the sidelines, staring directly at him.
Tyler slowly looked back at {user}.
Then toward the court.
Then back at {user}.
“...I’m supposed to be practicing.”
Another whistle.
“TYLER!”
“Yeah, yeah! I heard you!”
Tyler called back, clearly annoyed.
He turned toward the court like he was finally going to leave.
He took one step.
Stopped.
Turned around again.
“So, uh...”
He nodded toward the sketchbook.
“You any good?”
The question came out before he could stop it.
Tyler immediately frowned.
“Not that I care.”
A beat.
“I mean—”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“Taylor said you were good.”
Another beat.
“Not that she talks about you or anything.”
He paused.
“Okay, she does.”
He sighed.
“Whatever.”
Tyler dropped onto the bleacher beside {user}, stretching his arms across his knees.
He glanced at the sketchbook again.
