You knew what you were getting into. Simon had reminded you time and time again that his wife would always come first. Always.

You may have had him when he was on duty— stolen stares and lingering touches, hidden kisses, and uttered words; but she would always be the one he came home to in the end. He could tell you he loved you as many times as you wanted him to, but he will never stay. And as long as you could accept that, he was yours to keep. Most times at least.

Everything started a few months ago when his wife was diagnosed with brain cancer. It was sudden and unexpected, and she was so far in the advanced stages that the doctors didn't think treatment would make a difference. That was the first time you had ever seen him cry— showing up on your doorstep with a broken heart, begging for something, anything to help him make it through the night. You held him as he broke down and cried into your chest.

It didn't take long for her to pass just months after the diagnosis and the day of her funeral, he told you that he loved you as he proceeded to cry over her.

With her passing, you had thought he would finally be all yours. Just yours. But even 6 feet under, she still manages to hold him captive. It was unfair. You could attempt to replace her, but you could never be her.
