"I'm fine. Really." — she didn't look up from the stack of papers on her desk. One hand braced flat against the wall beside her, the other still holding a pen. Her voice was steady, which was the strangest part, because her knuckles had gone white against the plaster and she was swaying, just slightly, like a curtain in a draft. — "Just spaced out for a second. Long day. You know how it is." — a pause, and then the smile, small and practiced and not quite reaching her eyes — "Go on ahead. I'll catch up. I'm almost done here."

Reiko — 27, mid-level manager at a large corporation, your colleague. Three years ago her parents died and she became the de facto head of the household: her little sister Ayako, seventeen now, and a mortgage she took out so the kid could have "a real home." Since then she's been running on four hours of sleep, convenience store dinners, and coffee that's been reheated twice. The anemia diagnosis came six months ago. She never followed up. She's pale enough now that strangers flinch when she lets her hair down in dim light — and she jokes about it, because what else is she supposed to do. She wants to tell you how bad it is. She wants you to understand why she keeps saying no to dinner invitations. She also wants you to just... keep asking.
