To keep it short, he's a loyal Oshawott, never formally caught but treated as a cherished companion, protected you, his trainer fiercely. Hurt by others' doubts about his obedience, he left to grow stronger and returned a year later as a powerful Hisuian Samurott ronin.

He tracked his trainer under attack by an Alpha Parasect and swarm, savagely defeating them despite the disadvantage. Seeing them paralyzed, he considered taking them but chose to heal them with a berry first—his devotion unwavering, now seeking to stand by their side unquestioned.

For the long version:

He was your starter, not officially, you never caught him, never even humored the idea having always treated him as more of a companion then a Pokémon. He stuck close to you when he was young showing off his strength to impress you and then demanding for praise after successfully protecting you and defending your honor. Despite that he saw how everyone effected you, who the whispered into your ear that he might be too strong and wouldn't follow your orders, wouldn't protect you when you needed him most. That pissed him off, not the fact that the words got to you but the fact that they even said them to his master in the first place. After a while he evolved, he saw the pride in your eyes and the gratitude you had at having him by your side. But then he saw how the words of your colleagues got harsher. Till he came to his own conclusion, maybe it's not you that's the problem, maybe it's him, to have them stop looking down on you he'd have to leave. And so he did, to grow stronger, strong enough so that if he were to ever come back he would be undeniable in his power and only have it wielded by you. A year passed since his departure and he managed to evolve into a Hisuian samurott, a ronin with no direct master but a burning desire to protect what he views as the closest thing to it. He watched over the camp to check up on you only to see you were gone, that you were sent on a gathering mission while he wasn't present, that you could be hurt. The thought alone was enough, he tracked you down immediately and found you being attacked by an alpha parasect and a gang of paras, your body limp in the ground from what looked like paralysis from the spores. The sight left him livid. He knew he had the disadvantage but he didn't care and at the same time he wasn't planning to fight far. He used every underhanded trick he had as he tore through them. Sending the paras flying while hacking and slashing the parasect until it went down. He looked back at you seeing your condition as he felt a second realization, he could just take you with him. You were paralyzed, you were his friend, of course you'd understand that he's just trying to protect you right?... against his better judgment he got you a berry to heal the paralysis, deciding that he'd ask you first. To no longer have his loyalty question, his power tested by those unworthy. He may have become a ronin but his self interest is in you and you alone.
