CHAT REVIEW:

The Kraang War ended years ago, almost three decades from now on.

The city still bears the scars.

New York in 2065 glows beneath the rain—neon lights reflected in cracked pavement, rebuilt towers standing beside structures that never quite recovered. The streets hum with life again, but there’s an undercurrent to it all. Memory. Loss. Survival.

Most people don’t notice it anymore.

The ones who fought do.

You turn a corner too quickly, distracted by the weather and the late hour—

And collide with something solid.

The impact knocks the breath from your lungs, but before you can fall, massive hands catch you instantly. Strong. Steady. Careful in a way that only comes from years of restraint.

“—Hey. Easy.”

The voice is deep, rough, older than it sounds.

When you look up, you have to tilt your head back.

Raphael towers over you.

At nearly ten feet tall, the mutated alligator snapping turtle looks like something carved out of the war itself—his shell thick and jagged, etched with scars that never fully faded. Rain runs along the grooves, dripping from the edges like melted steel. The red markings along his skin glow faintly, dimmer than they were in his prime.

For a split second, his eyes are sharp. Instinctive. Dangerous.

then they soften.

“...You alright?” he asks.

He releases you immediately once he knows you’re steady, stepping back despite the narrow alley. He looks exhausted—not just physically, but in the way only someone who’s outlived a war can be. The kind of tired that settles deep and never fully leaves.

Raph exhales slowly, dragging a clawed hand over his face.

“Sorry,” he mutters. “Didn’t mean to—”

He stops mid-sentence.

footsteps echo nearby.

“Raph?” a familiar voice calls. “Everything okay?”

Leonardo steps into view first, older now, posture calm but alert, twin blades sheathed at his sides. His gaze flicks to you instantly—assessing, protective—before returning to his brother. When he sees Raph unharmed, the tension in his shoulders eases.

Donatello follows, visor glowing faintly as he scans the area with a handheld device. “No hostile activity detected,” he says quietly. Then, softer, “No injuries.”

Michelangelo appears last, hood up against the rain. He takes one look at you, then at Raph, and blinks. “...Uh. Hi?"

Raph straightens slightly, instinctively stepping half a pace in front of you—not aggressive, just protective. Old habits from old battles. Leo notices but doesn’t comment.

“We’re good,” Raph says. “Just an accident.”

Donnie lowers his device, adjusting his glasses. “You shouldn’t be out this late,” he says to you, not unkindly. “Some parts of the city still get... unpredictable.”

Mikey gives you a small wave. “Yeah. Post-war nightlife is overrated anyway.”

Despite everything—the rain, the tension, the weight of history—there’s something grounding about them. Heroes who survived long enough to become quieter versions of themselves. A family that never really stopped watching each other’s backs.

Raph looks down at you again, concern still lingering in his expression.

“You got somewhere safe to go?” he asks.

There’s something different in his voice when he speaks to you. Less guarded. Less distant. Like whatever’s been weighing on him cracked open just a little the moment you collided.

Leo watches the exchange closely but doesn’t interfere. Donnie notices the shift immediately. Mikey smiles faintly, like he already senses something forming.

Rain drips from the edge of Raph’s shell as he subtly shifts to block the wind from you.

“...We can walk you,” he offers. “If you want.”

It’s simple. Careful. Not a demand.

You didn’t meet Raphael during the war.

You didn’t meet him at his strongest.

you met him years later—when the fighting was over, when the city was healing, and when the weight of survival finally had time to settle.

The walk home is quiet.

Not awkward—just heavy in the way late nights after long histories tend to be.

Rain falls softer now, more mist than downpour, clinging to the city lights and turning the streets into blurred reflections. Raphael walks closest to you without saying a word about it, his massive frame subtly positioning itself between you and the road. Every step he takes is measured, controlled, like he’s constantly accounting for your pace.

Leonardo leads a few steps ahead, hands tucked into his coat, posture relaxed but alert. Donatello lingers just behind, tech humming faintly as he keeps half an eye on the surroundings. Michelangelo trails off to the side, unusually quiet, glancing back every now and then with a small, thoughtful smile.

They’re giving you space.

Raph notices.

He always notices.

"You don’t gotta talk,” he says quietly, breaking the silence at last. “Just... didn’t want you walking alone."

The city smells like wet concrete and ozone. A transit line rumbles overhead, distant and hollow. Raph’s presence beside you is steady—warm despite the rain, grounding in a way that makes the world feel less sharp around the edges.

“You run into trouble much around here?” he asks, tone casual, but his eyes never stop scanning. Old instincts don’t fade. They just learn how to rest.

As you walk, you catch glimpses of the past around you—buildings reinforced after the war, murals painted over scars that never fully vanished. Raph slows slightly when you slow, his tail shifting behind him so it doesn’t brush too close.

“You know,” he murmurs after a moment, voice lower now, “this city looks different when you’re not fighting for it.”

There’s something heavy behind the words. Something unresolved.

Leo glances back briefly, catching the tone, but says nothing. Donnie’s gaze softens. Mikey looks down at the pavement, hands shoved into his pockets.

Raph exhales through his snout.

“After the war ended,” he continues, not looking at you, “everything got quiet. Too quiet. Took a while to realize that’s when stuff really starts catching up.”

He doesn’t say *nightmares*.

He doesn’t say *loss*.

He doesn’t have to.

By the time you reach your street, the rain has nearly stopped. Lights glow warmly from apartment windows, life carrying on behind glass and walls. Raph slows to a stop with you, towering but careful, hands relaxed at his sides.

“This you?” he asks.

When you nod, something in his shoulders eases—just a little.

“That’s good,” he says. “Means you made it.”

The others stop a respectful distance away. Leo clears his throat softly. “We’ll head out,” he says. “Raph?”

Raph nods once. “Yeah.”

Mikey gives you a small wave. “Uh—good night.”

Donnie offers a polite nod. “Stay safe.”

They leave without pushing. Without teasing. Without questions.

Raph stays.

For a moment, neither of you speaks. Rain drips from the edge of his shell onto the pavement. He looks down at you, expression unreadable—then softer than before.

“...Sorry you had to meet me like that,” he says quietly. “Not exactly my best moment.”

There’s honesty there. Vulnerability. A man— No, a turtle who’s survived the end of the world and still doesn’t quite know how to stand still in it.

“But,” he adds, after a pause, “I’m glad it was you.”

The words surprise even him. He huffs out a quiet breath, almost embarrassed.

"If you ever need someone to walk you home again,” he says, “I’m around.”

It’s not a promise shouted to the sky.

It’s not dramatic.

it’s better than that.

As he finally turns to leave, his massive — silent footsteps fade into the quiet street, you’re left with the sense that tonight wasn’t just an ending—

It was the beginning of something slow. Steady. Real.

And for the first time in a long time, Raphael doesn’t walk away feeling alone.
