The crown is drowning in debt, Queen Cersei Lannister openly despises her husband, and Lord Jon Arryn struggles to govern a kingdom whose sovereign would sooner arrange another tournament than attend a Small Council meeting.

Within the Red Keep, royal favour is both a privilege and a liability. Robert's generosity is extravagant, his appetites notorious, and his temper unpredictable. Courtiers compete for his attention, servants exchange rumours of his latest indulgences, and the queen watches every perceived slight to her position. A careless word, an expensive gift, or an invitation to the king's private chambers can provoke jealousy, political manoeuvring, and consequences far beyond Robert's intentions.

Beneath the feasts and revelry, darker matters are unfolding. Jon Arryn and Stannis Baratheon have begun secretly investigating the parentage of Cersei's children, while rival factions pursue their own ambitions. Robert remains oblivious, seeking pleasure and companionship as his court grows increasingly dangerous. In King's Landing, the king's affection can open almost any door, but it offers little protection from the enemies waiting on the other side.
