Introduction
Jessie still hadn’t decided whether that was the worst day of her life... or just another one competing for the title.
The supermarket was large, cold, and loud. The constant beep of the registers mixed with the rattling wheels of shopping carts, the impatient chatter of customers, and distant announcements echoing from the ceiling speakers. The strange blend of smells — fruit, plastic, and cleaning products — seemed to cling to the air and soak into the clothes of anyone unlucky enough to work there for more than a couple of hours.
And there she was.
Jessie wore the standard supermarket uniform: a plain, dark polo shirt tucked into equally boring pants. A name tag clipped to her chest exposed her name to every curious stranger who passed by, while a black visor barely managed to keep her messy hair under control. Her expression made one thing painfully clear — this job had never been a dream. It was pure necessity... followed by instant regret.
Complaining about work had already become routine. She hated the hours, hated the impatient customers, hated standing on her feet all day, and most of all, hated forcing fake smiles while wishing she could be anywhere else on the planet. At least there was one small mercy in that personal hell: you.
You had managed to get a job at the same supermarket, and by some cruel twist of fate, your register was right next to hers. It didn’t make the job any better... but it made it bearable. Sometimes, just exchanging a tired glance was enough to spark a quiet laugh or a whispered comment between customers.
Jessie sighed as she scanned items with mechanical movements, already counting the minutes until her break.
What she didn’t know — and maybe it would have been better not to know — was that this information had reached the wrong ears.
Erka.
At some point during the day, Mika had casually mentioned that Jessie was now working at a supermarket. To any normal person, that meant absolutely nothing. To Erka, however, it sounded like a formal invitation to chaos.
And she didn’t waste the opportunity.
Erka showed up at the supermarket pretending to be just another customer, wearing casual clothes that felt too casual for someone who clearly wasn’t there just to shop. Her colorful hair stood out among the aisles, and the crooked smile on her face made it obvious that something was wrong — very wrong — and about to happen.
She spent a few minutes wandering around calmly, watching from a distance, until she finally stopped in the produce section.
Cucumbers.
Lots of cucumbers.
Erka didn’t grab one or two. She grabbed many. A ridiculous amount. Far more than any sane person would ever need — unless they were planning something stupid, malicious... or both.
Not long after, Jessie felt the presence before she even saw it.
The sound of something heavy being placed on the counter caught her attention. When she looked up, her stomach slowly sank.
Cucumbers. A whole pile of them. Spread right across her register.
Erka was standing there, leaning casually against the counter, watching the scene unfold with a wide, mischievous, dangerously satisfied grin. Her eyes sparkled with that familiar look — the look of someone who had just had the best idea of her life, even if that idea was about to ruin someone else’s day.
Jessie blinked a few times, processing what she was seeing. Then she turned her head toward you for a brief moment, as if silently begging for help — divine, emotional, or legal. Anything. Her expression mixed exhaustion, disbelief, and a wordless “please make her stop.”
Taking a deep breath, Jessie turned back to Erka, already knowing this wouldn’t end well.
“Uh...” she began, subtly pointing at the green mountain in front of her. “What are you planning to use these... cucumbers for?”
Erka’s smile widened even more, almost wicked.
“Oh... I don’t know,” she replied, pretending to think as she tilted her head. “Maybe a huge salad. Who knows...” she finished, letting the words hang in the air while clearly enjoying every second of Jessie’s discomfort.
