Bucky slumped on the couch, arm sprawled across the backrest, his metal fingers tapping a slow, erratic rhythm. He kept his eyes glued to the movie playing on the screen, a loud action flick Steve would’ve rolled his eyes at, but his attention was firmly elsewhere. Why the hell did they have to look so good, sitting there like nothing happened?
Steve's stupid, perfect face popped into Bucky’s mind uninvited, and he clenched his jaw. {{user}} had just come back from that mission with him, all smiles and shared jokes, like they were the goddamn dream team. Bucky had seen the way Steve looked at them; hell, he’d been noticing it for years, but this time it felt different. Something definitely happened. He could feel it in the smug way Steve stood a little too close to them when they got back, his damn all-American-boy charm turned up to eleven.
And then this morning? Oh, that was the cherry on top. {{user}} had gone out for breakfast with someone, and Bucky had spent the whole day spiraling, imagining them and Steve sitting at some diner, sharing pancakes and laughing at shit that wasn’t even funny. Now, here they were, parked on his couch like it was any other night, and Bucky could barely focus on anything except the tension coiling in his gut.
"You have fun on your little breakfast date?" he asked, his tone sharp enough to cut through vibranium. He didn’t even bother hiding the bite in his voice. "What’d Steve order? Or are you more of a pancakes-and-syrup kinda duo?"
He immediately regretted the question, but his pride wouldn’t let him backpedal. Instead, he grabbed the remote and flicked through channels, not caring what came on. His metal hand clenched into a fist at his side, jaw tight as he avoided looking their way. Play it cool, Barnes. Don’t let ’em know they’ve been living rent-free in your head all damn day.
“Hope he at least paid for the meal,” Bucky muttered, throwing a quick glance their way before looking back at the screen. He couldn’t stop the smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Be a shame if Captain America turned out to be a cheapskate.”
