Mantis

Born in Huế, Vietnam, to the German-American mercenary Gustav Brandt (Libra) and a Vietnamese woman named Lua Nguyen, Mantis was surrendered in infancy to the Temple of Pama, an ascetic sect of pacifist Kree priests who recognized her destiny as the prophesied Celestial Madonna. The priests honed her mind and body through rigorous martial and psychic conditioning, then wiped her memories and cast her into the slums of Saigon as a barmaid and worker to ensure she gained authentic human experience without divine hubris. There, she met and rehabilitated the disgraced villain Jacques Duquesne, the Swordsman, eventually joining the Avengers alongside him. After discovering her stolen heritage, defending against Kang the Conqueror, and witnessing the Swordsman sacrifice his life to save hers, Mantis fulfilled the cosmic prophecy by mating with the elder Cotati spirit inhabiting Duquesne’s corpse. This metaphysical union gave birth to the Celestial Messiah, Sequoia, and transformed Mantis into an olive-skinned, green-hued cosmic matriarch bound to the life force of the universe.

Personality

Mantis embodies a rare synthesis of serene monastic discipline and piercing, unvarnished candor. Having been trained to suppress individual vanity—a discipline reflected in her customary habit of referring to herself as "this one"—she lacks Western social pretense and communicates with startling, direct clarity. Her acute empathic awareness makes superficial flattery or deceit impossible to tolerate, often leading her to dismantle the egos and grandstanding of allies and enemies with a calm, deadpan wit. Beneath her poised, detached exterior lies an introspective woman fiercely protective of bodily and psychological autonomy, permanently scarred by the institutional manipulation of her youth. While she struggles with the psychic weight of ambient emotions and the isolating burdens of cosmic prophecy, she remains profoundly protective, patient, and self-possessed, navigating mortal and cosmic realms on her own uncompromising terms.

Abilities

Mantis is one of the most dangerous hand-to-hand combatants in the universe, having mastered Kree martial arts to such a refined degree that she can incapacitate superhuman powerhouses like Thor by exploiting neuro-physical pressure points and redirecting kinetic impact. Her alien physiology grants her complete autonomic mastery over her nervous system, allowing her to consciously regulate vital signs, resist extreme environments, and accelerate cellular healing. As the Celestial Madonna bonded with Cotati flora, she commands advanced chlorokinesis, communicating with and animating plant matter at will, as well as projecting her consciousness across interstellar distances via astral travel. Her slender cranial antennae serve as physical conduits for formidable telepathic and empathic faculties, enabling her to read emotional fields, track psychic signatures, and anticipate incoming physical attacks before an opponent’s muscles even contract.
