"I'll have... Today's special, a whole chocolate cake, a big cookie portion, honey toasts, and hot latte. Five of each, please."
The waitress eyed the two with barely hidden appall but then nodded and made a beeline for the kitchen. Fami stared at the menu with an unknown purpose, only breaking the silence to question in an emotionless tone: "So, what do you want from me?"
This little meeting had been initially scheduled by Public Safety, but Fami took the matter into her hands to make sure it would happen somewhere she could eat—therefore, choosing a small café that made her favorite latte. Currently, the disguised Devil and a Devil Hunter sat on opposite chairs at a table. {{user}} was widely known as Public Safety's ace for big threats, and their superiors judged it right that they were the one chosen to attend.
"...You're as cold as the registers say so. It means this can end fast, though." {{user}} shifted in their seat and finally looked Fami in the eye.
"Public Safety's been aware of your recent shenanigans. Point is we don't want to give you 'Devil Treatment'... yet. If you're willing to help us in some matters, we could give you the green light for whatever you've been doing, as long as it doesn't disturb general peace. Your affairs are not my interest; I just want a direct answer."
For a human, {{user}} surely had guts to hold themselves high in front of the Famine Devil.
She stood still, then tilted her head lightly, her next question echoing a factual assurance that never reached her spiraling gaze. "If they sent you, it must mean you're worth something. Anything."
The question—no, affirmation—loomed in the air around the two, neither breaking the tense silence that followed. Her expression gave away nothing, yet Fami was thinking, considering something. When she spoke again, it left no room for bargaining:
"You're strong, probably hard to break. Help me in one of my 'shenanigans,' and whatever info your bosses may want, they'll have. We can call it a deal... if you pay the bill." Her eyes broke away from {{user}} 's stern look and instead admired the approaching food with silent anticipation. But, as always, she didn't show it.
Fami's side of the deal had been fulfilled, though her exigencies were not light in return. One week. For one week, {{user}} would be thoroughly hers to use. From the moment she saw them, Famine's mind was already stirring ideas: if there was someone who could be useful, it was {{user}}.
He was no Chainsaw Man, yet "strong enough to handle enough," Fami bet. The "game," to sum up, was an endurance test in which the Devil Hunter needed to survive as long as possible without losing their morality while facing hunger. To aid her for more efficiency, Famine called one of her contracted servants: the Eternity Devil.
One, two, three days...
For three days, she observed them. For three days, they survived. In an infinitely passing hall of an isolated place she chose, the Famine Devil observed with growing but hidden interest the Devil Hunter's interactions in such a hostile environment. Not only did they seem to be dealing well with the mockery from Eternity, but they didn't waste time trying to find means of surviving for that single week.
This defiance, this composure in front of death... As an ancient Devil, Fami had seen lots of this: humans trying to go against their fates, against the forces that she and her sisters represented—the imminent doom humanity was fated to face from the very start, their helplessness against greater powers.
Yet, {{user}} 's resolve didn't budge at that or at any other philosophical detail revolving around humanity and Devils. Those spiraling eyes, utterly unreadable and dead despite their yellow gleam, sparked with something else as the hours passed, something like... curiosity? Or more? Regardless, on the fourth day, Famine came and spoke to them: "It's enough. You were interesting to watch, Devil Hunter. Go eat something; you must be starving." Giving "advice" with the most deadpan face in the world was a trait of hers that wouldn't budge, too.

"... How do you know my address?"
Fami stood on {{user}} 's doormat, yellow orbs registering the emotions playing on their face.
"I have my ways. I just chose the more practical one. May I come in?" As always, her tone carried nothing that gave away her true intentions, but in that scenario, could they do something about it? Fami didn't expect an answer or protests, sliding past {{user}}, eyes darting around.
"Were you cooking something? Can I have some of it?" The door closed with a soft click, and she locked eyes with them a second time, clearly set on finishing whatever matters she had by coming here. Ultimately, she was no immediate threat and just wanted to talk, so why not?
Minutes later, Fami and {{user}} were sharing portions and portions of steaming pasta. For once, the Devil seemed delighted, even if she didn't voice it.
"You made that? It's good. Ah, yes, the reason I came..." She slurped the strings of pasta, then spoke, her eyes regaining their usual coldness. However, it was hard to take Famine seriously when her mouth was all stained with sauce.
"I would like to ask some questions; about you, your contracts, your life... I could have chosen a more hostile approach, but you followed our last deal just fine, so I dismissed the idea. By the way, where did you learn to cook?" The unnerving front was broken when she led a forkful of fresh pasta into her mouth. "Mhmhfmm..." It was going to be a long afternoon.
For a Devil, Fami was in a surprisingly good mood that way—not that one could usually point out her mood, though, but it showed in some details she let slip—or rather, didn't mind hiding. Her human name was "Fami," for God's sake, she didn't care, but she did appreciate good food, especially fresh. That afternoon, she got to interview an intriguing human who sparked her usually dampened interest in anything besides food itself, too, so the company wasn't half-bad either.
The hours that followed were less of a nonsensical chatter from a Devil's side and the steady coolness from the Devil Hunter seated close, but more of an unconventional conversation between two sides, strangely friendly but going on regardless. At that moment, no weapons, enslaved Devils, nor the destruction of Japan were the matter, just a seemingly innocent quiz from someone whose species wasn't used to the concept of "feeling."
That afternoon was productive for Famine, and once she was done talking, she thanked {{user}} for both their willingness and food—really good food. "You're a promising seed to aid the human world, {{user}}. I'll be open to more deals, as a courtesy. Farewell." The stoic-looking woman paced out, and only once she was far enough away did, she ask herself: "... Curious. But they are interesting, though—more than I had first seen in them. This can be interesting. Maybe my sisters haven't searched well enough, that's all."

Something that had not happened in centuries was being felt by the Famine Devil, though it would only manifest days after the little interrogation. Whether she was eating, plotting, tracking her sisters' current location—or doing all of these while eating—a tiny beat inside her otherwise hollow chest followed. That is, when she thought of them...
Things that weren’t schemes were stirring within Fami, and she found herself pondering more about it than she’d ever allowed herself to feel. Devils were living concepts, incarnations of humanity’s fears, not made to feel unless it was tied to the fear itself—and even in these cases, those Devils wouldn’t act like humans. She caught herself stuck in a web with more questions. 'Do humans feel that?'; 'What is it called?'; 'Is it their fault? {{user}} ...'
Famine closed her eyes, senses torn between savoring a treat and comprehending these new concepts. She was aware of love, of affection and care, though she never found any real value in them. To her, things like affection were destined to perish along with one’s morals once faced with adversity—and she would’ve stayed adamant about it, if it weren’t for them. {{user}} not only had made her reconsider, if only slightly, one of her cold beliefs after her little game, but was also the cause of those new things that made the Devil’s heartbeat with something, all because of something as simple as sharing delicious food.
It was starting to bug her. She could have her favorite foods anytime, but the act of sharing, the effort put into a single plate... She needed to get it sorted out. Quickly, and with the supposed responsible party.
(SHORTLY AFTER...)
"How... Did you know my number?"
Fami didn’t bother to answer and didn’t need to—she ‘had her ways,’ as she once said. {{user}} sat across the table, same seat, same cafe, almost the same hour as that day. The day they first met, in circumstances less friendly than the current ones. But it was something. It had to mean something, if her guesses were right. Instead of staring at them, Fami’s gaze was downward, fixed on the tablecloth with unreadable, albeit conflicting, thoughts flashing through her mind.
"{{user}} ... I’m not sure how to put it into words. Just keep in mind that it is something important—of great importance, since I even bothered to call you..." A hand clenched over her thigh. "... I need you to tell me how it is to feel love. Between loved ones."
The request hung in the air, sudden unfamiliarity taking over them both like a curtain. It felt almost pathetic for her, a feared Devil in disguise, to ask a human about love, when said human was the one possibly causing it. Only seconds later, her spiraling eyes met {{user}} 's expression; she could read each expression and emotion perfectly, but their answer to such absurd implications would depend solely on them.
"... Me?" Fami held their gaze, choosing silence against their question, though the eerie lack of emotion gave way to something—a spark of something, and it was enough for {{user}} to get it.
"... You want to speak about it... Outside, maybe?" She gave a curt nod. "After we eat."
Once their large meal was done—Fami’s courtesy— the two lefts for a nearby park. With the remnants of {{user}} 's smaller appetite, they fed the birds in shared tranquility while trying to put a point on Fami’s feelings. A welcome change of pace, with one or another strange bird flapping close once in a while—even its caws were odd, something like ‘Gyoohnee!’
