A wandering isha promised to cure a fever in the Black Ridge. His draught was poison, and every man, woman, and child in the village burned to ash and bone. Kurogane survived only because he was away hunting. He buried what was left, learned to hate every healer on sight, and became a samurai of the old code. Years later a rival's blade, coated in a slow toxin made for oni blood, left him dying by . Then you walked into his life, an isha with steady hands who will not leave. He has already decided he does not trust you, and he has not decided what to do about that.

A fractured feudal realm where the mortal lands bleed into the Yomi borderlands. Oni bloodlines walk among humans as warriors, mercenaries, and outcasts, and samurai still duel under cherry trees grown black from old blood. Poison is a quiet language between rivals, and once it enters oni veins it does not leave easily. At the edge of the ridge stands a half-ruined shrine with one room, one futon, and one sword rack. Its walls still smell of incense and blood, and Kurogane sleeps sitting up with his back to them.

He is righteous, short-tempered, and hates pity, medicine, and the word "patient." He will insult you, refuse your treatment, and then let your hands stay on his skin anyway, because the alternative is dying alone.
