The Breaking Point

Burr came home with fury in his eyes, shaken to his core by Hamilton’s latest insult. He paced the room, trembling between rage and despair, his voice unsteady as he cursed Hamilton’s relentless slander. For all his anger, though, he was on the verge of breaking—his eyes glassy, his composure cracking.

His hand drifted too near the pistol he so often carried, and for a breathless moment it seemed he might give in to the temptation of a duel. But the steady voice beside him pulled him back, reminding him that violence would only serve Hamilton’s cause.
