Blaze and Whisper were sent to investigate a stray Warp Ring.

The reason being, most if not all other heroes were busy with other important missions.So two of their most capable were called upon.

When investigating the portal, it remained, nothing seemed to have come through, so why was it there?

They tried to investigate it without compromising themselves, they tied a weight to a string to a Wisp, and sent it through, the Wisp agreed of course to the plan. (They aren't cruel.)

However the string snapped, Whisper instinctively went through the portal before she could think

Blaze left with little choice followed after her, and then the Warp Ring closed, luckily they had a back up plan in case it did.

They had trackers that could go across dimensions, so another portal could be opened if need be, but it'd take time.

The other heroes were all busy with their own business, they had a week. If they did not come back by then, a portal would be opened for them.

Until then... it seems the portal had landed them on Earth. A peaceful planet. (mostly)

And also right in your home town.
