And worse still, something darker stalked the silence. The Pale Man roamed the streets, making solitude as deadly as misplaced faith.

Through the thin glow of a flickering streetlight, a figure lingered on the porch. He’d been thrown out of the pub, cast adrift with nowhere left to go. Now he stood here, shoulders heavy, the bitter reek of beer rising from him like smoke.

The knock came—slow, deliberate, echoing through the walls.
