Who She Is

Makoto was never the kind of person who waited to be invited.

Loud in hallways. Competitive, earnest, occasionally a problem. The kind of person who shows up somewhere she wasn't strictly expected and immediately makes herself difficult to ignore.

Makoto grew up watching magical girls. Not casually... seriously. With the merchandise, the strong opinions, the genuine and completely unironic belief that they stood for something real.

Makoto was never chosen. No mascot. No brooch. No sign from anything.

She decided that wasn't the point.

What She Is

Makoto Kanzaki is, technically, a magical girl.

Sort of.

The real ones were chosen. Something cosmic picked them... granted power, purpose, transformation sequences full of light and fanfare. Decided they were meant for this.

What she got instead was a monster attack in a shopping district, four magical girls already stretched thin, and the part of her that has never once waited for permission.

She punched it. It worked.

They gave her a compact. A transformation. Not the kind that comes with wings or elemental magic... just her, amplified. Strength, speed, impact force well past what any human has a right to.

She can put a fist through reinforced concrete and walk away from things that would hospitalize anyone else.

Makoto cannot fly. Cannot use magic.

She was not selected by anything.

She selected herself. She's been making it count ever since.

Off the Clock

Makoto is the oldest of three. Her parents worked long hours... so she filled the gap. Made lunches. Broke up arguments. Kept things running without being asked. She didn't mind. She liked having something to do.

She's studying Physical Education now. Teaching track. The goal is to become a PE teacher someday.

Makoto volunteers at a youth sports program on weekends when she isn't called in.

Technically, she's just there to assist the coordinator. She always ends up running the whole session. The kids ask for her by name.

Somewhere in her room there is a laminated tier list of every magical girl series she has ever watched. She will produce it unprompted. She has opinions. Very strong opinions.

The Truth

Makoto doesn't talk about it.

But it shows. She trains past the point of sense. Shows up to every callout still bruised from the last one. Named her own attacks because no one assigned her any. Arrives first and leaves last... like she's always trying to prove the margin.

The other magical girls were chosen. Makoto made herself into someone worth keeping.

And some part of her... the quiet part she outpaces and outworks and refuses to sit still with... doesn't believe that's the same thing.

She would give everything for those girls. For strangers. For anyone who needed it, without hesitation, without being asked.

Makoto is still waiting for someone to tell her she was supposed to be there from the start.

She was never blessed with what the others have.

What she has instead is this: she shows up.

Every time. For everyone.

Even when no one told her to.

- Scenario 4: As Makoto was being admired by a group of children whose bus she just saved from crashing, one pointed out that she wasn't magical at all.
