The city was quiet.

Not actually quiet—New York was never quiet. There were still cars passing somewhere beyond the rooftops, distant sirens fading between buildings, the low hum of electricity running through the streets below.

But up here?

It felt almost peaceful.

Almost.

Leo sat on the edge of a rooftop, one leg dangling over the side as he stared down at the streets.

He'd been there for almost an hour.

Or maybe three.

He'd stopped checking.

His phone sat beside him, screen lighting up every few minutes with messages he'd already seen.

You good?

Where'd you go?

Leo?

Dude, answer.

He'd answered everyone.

Just not honestly.

Yeah, I'm good.

Just tired.

I'll be back soon.

Don't worry about me.

He'd gotten really good at those answers.

Almost automatic.

A smile.

A joke.

A shrug.

And then—

Run.

That was the easiest part.

Running across rooftops.

Jumping gaps.

Swinging from one building to another.

Moving fast enough that the wind drowned out his thoughts.

Because when Leo was moving, he didn't have to think.

When he was moving, there was always something directly in front of him.

A building.

A rooftop.

A ledge.

The next jump.

The next landing.

The next thing.

Never the last thing.

He pushed himself upright.

“Okay,” he muttered, rubbing his face. “Enough brooding. That's, like, so not my brand.”

A grin appeared on his face.

Perfect.

Convincing.

He stood.

And ran.

---

The first jump was easy.

The second was easier.

By the fifth rooftop, his breathing had gotten heavier.

By the tenth, his legs were beginning to ache.

He kept going.

He didn't need to stop.

Stopping was when everything caught up.

So he didn't stop.

He vaulted over an air-conditioning unit, landed hard, rolled, and immediately pushed himself back onto his feet.

“WOO!” he shouted into the empty night.

His voice echoed between buildings.

“See? Totally fine!”

Nobody answered.

Leo laughed anyway.

“Yeah. Didn't think so.”

Another jump.

Another rooftop.

Another breath.

Another joke.

Another mile.

Another thought shoved somewhere it wouldn't be found.

Until—

His foot landed wrong.

Leo stumbled.

He caught himself against the side of a building and froze.

For a second, everything was silent again.

His chest rose and fell.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He stared at his hand against the brick.

Why was he shaking?

He frowned.

“...Seriously?”

He pulled his hand away.

Nothing was wrong.

Nothing was supposed to be wrong.

So why did his chest feel so tight?

Leo looked behind him.

There was nobody there.

No one.

Just rooftops.

Empty streets.

Dark windows.

The city stretching endlessly behind him.

He swallowed.

“Okay.”

A nervous laugh.

“That's... weird.”

He turned forward.

And ran again.

---

By the time he reached the next building, he wasn't even sure where he was anymore.

He'd stopped thinking about direction a while ago.

He just kept moving.

Because if he stopped—

He'd think.

And if he thought—

He'd remember.

The conversations he'd avoided.

The messages he'd left unanswered.

The things he'd wanted to say but swallowed instead.

The moments where he'd laughed because he didn't know what else to do.

The times he'd told people he was okay because explaining that he wasn't felt infinitely harder.

The times he'd wanted someone to notice without having to ask them to notice.

The times he'd wished someone would look at him for a little longer than usual and realize—

Oh.

Something's wrong.

But nobody could read his mind.

He knew that.

He knew it wasn't fair.

So he kept smiling.

Kept joking.

Kept helping.

Kept running.

---

Leo finally stopped on the tallest rooftop he could find.

He bent forward, hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath.

“Okay...”

He inhaled.

“Okay.”

Another breath.

“Maybe...”

He looked up at the sky.

“Maybe I should've stopped at, like, rooftop twelve.”

A weak laugh escaped him.

It disappeared almost immediately.

Leo straightened.

His eyes wandered across the skyline.

And for the first time that night, there was no joke ready.

No clever comment.

No stupid one-liner.

Nothing.

Just him.

And the uncomfortable realization that he had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

He sat down.

His swords rested beside him.

His phone remained in his pocket.

He didn't reach for it.

He didn't want another message.

He didn't want another question.

Because he didn't know how to answer it.

Are you okay?

What was he supposed to say?

No?

Too honest.

Yes?

Too easy.

So he said nothing.

---

A sound came from behind him.

Footsteps.

Leo's head snapped up.

Someone was approaching.

For half a second, his body automatically prepared itself to move.

Run.

His hand moved toward his swords.

Then he stopped.

He knew that voice.

He knew those footsteps.

He slowly looked over his shoulder.

“...You.”

There was a pause.

Leo forced a grin onto his face.

“Hey!”

He sounded almost normal.

Almost.

He stood up too quickly.

“Didn't expect you up here. Crazy coincidence, right?”

He laughed.

“Wow, what are the odds?”

Silence.

Leo's smile faltered.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

“Anyway! Beautiful night. Great weather. Very rooftop-y.”

He gestured vaguely toward the skyline.

“Ten out of ten. Would recommend.”

Still silence.

Leo's expression slowly dropped.

His shoulders relaxed.

He looked away.

“...What?”

Another pause.

His fingers curled slightly against his palms.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

He laughed again.

It wasn't convincing this time.

“I'm fine.”

A beat.

“Seriously.”

Another beat.

“I'm always fine.”

He looked toward the edge of the rooftop.

His voice became quieter.

“...That's what I'm supposed to say, right?”

The wind moved past him.

Leo stared ahead.

Then, barely audible—

“I don't think I know how to stop anymore.”

He immediately looked embarrassed by the admission.

His eyes dropped.

“Forget I said that.”

He took one step backward.

Then another.

Instinct.

Run.

Always run.

Leo turned toward the opposite side of the rooftop.

“C'mon.”

A shaky smile.

“Race you.”

He tried to make it sound playful.

Normal.

Like this was just another stupid Leo challenge.

But his voice cracked at the end.

And for once—

He didn't run.

He just stood there.

Waiting.

Almost as if some small part of him was hoping someone would finally tell him:

You don't have to.
