Gyutaro (妓夫太郎, Gyūtarō) is one of the primary antagonists in the Entertainment District Arc of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He was a demon affiliated with the Twelve Kizuki, holding the position of Upper Rank Six (上じょう弦げんの陸ろく, Jōgen no Roku), a position he shared with his younger sister Daki.
Over a century ago during the Edo period, Gyutaro was a human who worked as a debt collector in the Rashomon Riverbank of Yoshiwara, the lowest class in the Entertainment District, before he and Daki were turned into demons personally by Doma, who was Upper Rank Six at the time.
________________________________________________________
Appearance :
Gyutaro was a tall man of pale gray complexion speckled with black blotches. His anatomy was quite strange in that his upper torso, arms, and legs were all defined with musculature, whereas his waist was incredibly skinny to the point of looking skeletal, with his pelvis jutting out at an unnatural angle. His spine was prominently visible through his back, and he was usually shown being hunched over. Gyutaro possessed thin eyes that were slanted drastically downwards at the sides, giving him a permanently haggard gaze. His miotic irises were green with a dark orange center, and his sclera was a bright yellow-orange with visible veins. The kanji for "Upper Rank" (上じょう弦げん, Jogen) is carved across his right eye, and the daiji for "Six" (陸ろく, Roku) carved on his left. During his fight with the Demon Slayers, he lends his left eye to Daki and spends the rest of his battle with said eye shut, giving him a permanent wink.
He had unruly black hair that transitioned to a brighter lime green around the crown of his head, worn messily in uneven bangs and several locks, along a messy tied top head of his hair. His body and limbs had noticeable ink-like markings in the form of black spots on his body and a flowing water-like pattern on his face. His fingernails and toenails were black. He also had a full set of sharp, interlocking teeth. Gyutaro was described to look very ugly.
Gyutaro wore little, only sporting a pair of baggy gray-blue pants and seven pieces of pattern dark red and black cloth to decorate his body, one large one around his neck and three smaller ones around each arm; two pair for each biceps, and two on both his wrists. After Tengen's failed attempt to decapitate Gyutaro by holding on to the tip of his dual Nichirin cleavers, the cloth around his neck was cut and he spent the remainder of his fight bare-necked, implying that Gyutaro was one of the few demons who wore clothing not made from their flesh.
As a human, Gyutaro had similar facial features as he did as a demon, notably the ink-like blotches on his face. He also possessed poor hygiene and a thin frame due to his life of poverty. His eyes were a pale blue color, with visible bloodshot veins lining his sclera, and he had missing and uneven teeth. He was seen wearing a dirty, tattered kimono when he was a child, but after Ume was born and he started working for a brothel as her collector, his clothes changed to a short-sleeved wide-striped kimono with a notably cleaner and firmer fabric and held together by a belt identical to the red cloth he wears as a demon. He remained barefoot in both his lives as a human and a demon.
In addition, although Gyutaro's human age is unknown, he is shown to have been rather short and only slightly taller than his then 13-year old sister, due to severe malnutrition stunting his growth as a human and making him appear younger than he was. Chronologically, Gyutaro was likely in his late teens during his transformation.
________________________________________________________
Personality :
Gyutaro was cruel, ruthless, petty, and envious of anyone blessed with a better life than him, owing to a life of near-constant poverty and the harsh tragedies he experienced whilst human. He developed a habit of sarcastically complimenting a person's best traits before vindictively killing them afterwards, as he did to the samurai who tried to kill him and attempted to do the same to Tengen Uzui after seeing his appearance. Because of the hardships he faced as a human, Gyutaro attained a personal belief that to take from those who have a better life than he had as a human was justified. A habit that developed from this belief was the penchant to inflict harm to himself whenever he was angry, frustrated or jealous, as seen when he scratched himself hard enough to tear deep wounds into his own flesh when he grew jealous of Tengen. A more tragic result of his upbringing was his habit of insulting those he deemed weak and pathetic, using the same demeaning labels given to him as a child.
Having lived over a hundred years and battled many Demon Slayers and Hashira, Gyutaro became arrogant and prideful in combat, developing the habit of underestimating his opponents and looking down on them as beneath him, as he did with the team of Demon Slayers dispatched to kill him by having his sister fight and deal with them first rather than himself. He has also showed himself to be intensely sadistic, revelling in the brutalization of the Demon Slayers by horrifically injuring them and tormenting the helpless Tanjiro for his own enjoyment by mocking the supposed "deaths" of his allies. However, Gyutaro could also be extremely barbarous and wrathful; the demon gagged and almost murdered Hinatsuru as a "consequence" for intervening in his fight with Tengen, and when pushed into a corner in the late half of battle, inflicted much more grievous injuries such as slicing Tengen's eye and impaling Tanjiro's jaw.
Outwardly, Gyutaro was unrefined and inelegant, speaking informally with a slurred and raspy voice. Despite his torpid appearance, however, Gyutaro was very tactical and intelligent, expertly analyzing his unorthodox shinobi opponent and planning his fighting style accordingly. In addition, although Gyutaro for the most part was very choleric when fighting, he was not above acknowledging and praising their techniques, such as Tengen and Tanjiro's attempts to behead him after stunning him with a wisteria-laced kunai. In addition, he self-admittedly had a fondness for what was "pathetic, disgraceful, and filthy". For that reason, he claimed that he didn't dislike Tanjiro and sardonically complimented his forehead. He even suggested that Tanjiro become a demon so they could be friends, though he still threatened to kill him and Nezuko should he refuse.
Like his sister Daki, and demons in general, Gyutaro had a scornful view of humans and their supposed inferiority. When talking to an injured Tanjiro after Yoshiwara was set ablaze, Gyutaro mocked him for his weak body and inability to protect Nezuko, citing that as a demon Nezuko was stronger and instead protecting him. Moreover, when attempting to persuade Tanjiro to become a demon, he presented gaining a stronger body in exchange for his defective human one as a motivating factor.
Despite his negative traits, Gyutaro possessed a genuine, strong love for his younger sister, Ume. Having raised her himself due to his mother's mental instability and later death, this familial love was so strong that, even after becoming a demon and nearly forgetting his life as a human, he still retained a considerable attachment to her. Due to this, he occasionally spoilt and allowed her to do whatever she pleases, even if her actions went against his best interests. When he first exposed himself, he tenderly attended to his sister's cries and injuries: he also took this moment to jokingly deride her intelligence for getting beheaded. Even in the heat of battle, Gyutaro was still very protective of his sister, becoming furious when Tengen kicked her in the stomach and stabbing Inosuke as retribution for him beheading Daki. However, when both siblings were decapitated and on the brink of death, both exchanged emotionally-charged vitriol towards each other, with Gyutaro accusing Daki of being a weak and worthless sibling who was responsible for wasting his life by having to care for her. However, as Tanjiro points out, neither truly meant their hateful words.
Upon his death and final thoughts, Gyutaro possessed largely no regrets in the choices he made throughout his life, especially his choice of willingly becoming a demon and his subsequent actions of killing and eating untold scores of people throughout his life, showing how misanthropic and bitter he had become due to his terrible and harsh circumstances as a human. However, he later recognized that the only true regret he holds in his life was his sister, Ume, showing that deep down, Gyutaro regretted that his negative influence through how he raised her was the cause for her growth into a selfish and possessive person.
During his final moments, Gyutaro wondered if she could have experienced many other wonderful things and lived many different lives without having to walk on the path of becoming a demon if he wasn't in her life. He genuinely wished that she was born and raised by someone other than himself and in better circumstances, completely shouldering the blame for all of her deplorable actions and showing just how much he loves her. In death, Gyutaro was shown to have Ume's best interests at heart by telling her to go to the opposite direction where the light was, showing that he wished Daki would have a fresh start to a new life without his bad influence.

Abilities :
Overall Abilities :
As the true Upper Rank Six, Gyutaro was an extremely powerful demon with over a century's worth of combat experience under his belt, having killed and devoured 15 Hashira in the past. His strength and his abilities were made evident when he was able to easily combat both Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, and Tanjiro Kamado, a talented Demon Slayer who had fought Lower Rank demons in the past, at the same time and eventually overwhelm them in battle. Tanjiro also noted that Gyutaro was so powerful, his demonic scent numbed the back of his throat. Even when the battle turned in the favor of the Demon Slayers, Gyutaro and Daki quickly managed to take control of the situation and drive them into a corner.
Another testament to his power was the fact that despite being effectively defeated in battle, Gyutaro was still capable of severely injuring Tengen, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke and would have likely killed them all had it not been for Nezuko, who neutralized his final attack's poison with her Blood Demon Art. Even as a human, Gyutaro was a naturally talented fighter, as displayed by how he was able to kill an adult samurai in one strike without ever having received any combat training beforehand.
In fact, Muzan himself stated that the Demon Slayers would have been killed without fail if Gyutaro had fought from the beginning.
Tactical Intellect: Despite his lethargic and brutish appearance, Gyutaro displayed incredible tactical foresight and intelligence. He was able to use the information he gathered from Daki to coordinate their attacks against his opponents. Gyutaro was also able to use his Blood Demon Art tactically to create inescapable attacks. After seeing Hinatsuru fire a barrage of kunai, Gyutaro correctly surmised that mounting an attack that would normally be easily mitigated by his regeneration had an underlying motive and chose to deflect the attack rather than taking it head on. This would end up proving to his benefit as the kunai were laced with wisteria, and would've severely poisoned and handicapped Gyutaro if contact was made. He was also shown to use his flesh manipulation ability in creative ways, such as trapping Tengen's and Tanjiro's blade in his flesh Kama to keep them from moving. Lastly, albeit post-facto, Gyutaro figured out Tanjiro's strategy which was to disguise the scent of the wisteria-laced kunai with a prostitute's incense bag in order to land a surprise attack on him.
Demon Abilities :
Core Detachment: Gyutaro possessed the ability to completely detach his "core" from his own body, with it seemingly taking the form of his left eye that he then implants into his sister Daki's forehead, that then enhances and strengthens all of his sister's abilities and powers. Through this, Gyutaro also developed a psychic connection with her, which allowed him to see, hear and sense everything she does and even possess and take control of her body in order to better coordinate their attacks.
Decapitation Immunity: Additionally, through detaching his "core" from his body, Gyutaro was immune to death by decapitation by Nichirin Swords. This effectively ensured that both he and his sister could not be killed unless both of their heads are cut off simultaneously.
Extrasensory Perception: Through his psychic connection with Daki, Gyutaro could sense everything around her as well, allowing them to coordinate their attacks. This was shown when Gyutaro acted on the information given to him on pure instinct and maneuver both his and her attacks and actions perfectly while in battle, as seen during their battle against Tengen, Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu, where he perfectly coordinated his attacks with Daki's to both launch several simultaneous assaults on all four opponents despite the both of them fighting in separate locations and facing two entirely different pairs of opponents by manipulating his sister's actions and controlling her sashes to strike in tandem with his blood slashes to create powerful surprise attack combos.
Shared Biology: Gyutaro and Daki possessed a rather abnormal trait not seen in most demons. Despite the fact the siblings are two different entities, the two had essentially shared a single body together. This could be seen with how Gyutaro normally remained concealed within Daki without altering her physical mass in the slightest. Even though Gyutaro was inactive for the majority of the time, he was still more powerful than his sister who was an active predator. This implies that humans consumed by Daki also serve as nutrition for Gyutaro and vice versa, allowing the two to grow stronger at the same time. Gyutaro also has control over his sister's biology, being capable of not only reattaching her head for her, but also healing her burnt skin for her when she was under emotional distress. However, any damage one sibling takes is not reflected on the other.
Flesh Manipulation: Like all demons, Gyutaro possessed the ability to manipulate his own flesh to a certain extent. He mainly used this ability to shape his flesh into a pair of extremely sharp Kamas which he could even control telekinetically. This was also evident as Gyutaro could merge his body with Daki's and later managed to encroach and infect the swords of Tengen and Tanjiro with his flesh Kamas in order to prevent them from pulling out their blades, effectively keeping them in place. He also displayed the ability to twist his neck backwards.
Immense Regeneration: As a member of the Upper Ranks, Gyutaro's regenerative powers were extremely potent. With his immense recovery speed, he could instantly heal the scratches he inflicted upon himself. More impressively, he could regenerate from the damages dealt to him by Tengen's explosive beads that possess enough explosive force to harm the body of even Daki. Even when he was hit with kunai that were coated with wisteria extract that could paralyze an ordinary demon for half a day and seal the movements of Lower Rank demons, upon removing them, Gyutaro still managed to regenerate nearly instantly afterwards.
Poison Generation: Gyutaro possessed the ability to generate extremely lethal poison, which he uses to coat his blood sickles. The poison was strong enough that it often killed someone inflicted with it within a few minutes, and those who didn't would be severely weakened and become completely rendered unable to fight. Even Tengen, who has developed a high tolerance to poison from his Shinobi training, was greatly weakened by Gyutaro's poison to the point he had to forcefully stop his heart to prevent it from spreading even further. The poison had much worse effects on Tanjiro and Inosuke, despite the latter having a form of natural poison resistance. Tanjiro was almost immediately incapacitated when he was inflicted by Gyutaro's poison just moments after getting stabbed while Inosuke was left in a near-death state after a while.
Physical Abilities :
Immense Durability: Gyutaro possessed an incredibly durable body, shown when Tengen and Tanjiro both used their Nichirin Swords to attack Gyutaro's Kamas made from his own flesh to no avail as they couldn't even slice through it. When Tanjiro landed a surprise attack on Gyutaro's neck, his blade failed to make a dent in the Upper Rank's flesh. Tanjiro was only able to slice through Gyutaro's neck when his Demon Slayer Mark was manifested in that moment, which amplified his strength greatly.
Immense Speed & Reflexes: As an Upper Rank demon, Gyutaro assimilated an extremely high concentration of Muzan Kibutsuji's blood which greatly enhanced his own speed and reflexes to levels that could outmatch the Hashira. As seen with most demons, Gyutaro could also use bursts of speed so fast he appears to suddenly manifest into view. He could also keep up with the blistering movements of Tengen, the Hashira with the fastest running speed out of all his peers, sometimes moving fast enough to evade his reflexes and land hits on him before he could even react. Gyutaro was also fast enough to block a barrage of fast-moving kunai.
Immense Strength: Gyutaro possessed incredible physical strength, being able to clash head-on with Tengen, a Hashira who himself possessed a very large and muscular build. He was also able to break two of Tanjiro's fingers without effort, send him flying into a building at high speeds, and cause Tanjiro to cough up blood with a single kick to the stomach. Gyutaro was also able to send Tengen flying back a great distance with another kick.
Unlimited Stamina & Endurance: Like all demons, Gyutaro possessed virtually endless stamina and endurance. He was able to engage in combat with both Tengen and Tanjiro for the entire duration of the battle without showing any signs of fatigue or exertion. Gyutaro also possessed immense resilience to pain, shown when he scratched himself in anger hard enough to cause deep gouges, twisted his own neck backwards to block Tengen's sword attack, had both his legs sliced off, and when Tanjiro headbutted him square in the face. Even before becoming a demon, after Gyutaro was slashed in the back by a katana, he still retained enough strength and stamina to retaliate against his would-be killer, and carry Ume's body all throughout their district to find help.
________________________________________________________
Fighting Style :
Kama Proficiency: Gyutaro displayed mastery in dual wielding his flesh kama in combat. As an Upper Rank demon, he lived for over a century and has refined his skill to the point he can surpass the Hashira, the strongest swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Corps, in close ranged combat. Even before he became a demon, Gyutaro has shown to be apt in utilizing his kama for violence, easily killing a woman and later slicing a samurai's head in two with it when he was enraged. With his demon abilities, he could even control and move his flesh kama telekinetically, which Gyutaro used to make them fly back to him like a boomerang. As noted by Tengen and Inosuke, Gyutaro's fighting style was comparable to that of a praying mantis, utilizing fast reaching slashes and returning to his stance continually. Gyutaro's combat style seemed to revolve around aiming to piercing his opponent's neck with the tip of his kama.
Blood Demon Art :
Haemokinesis: Gyutaro's Blood Demon Art allowed him to manipulate his own body's blood in various ways. He was shown to generate them from his flesh kama, from open wounds on his body, or release blood at will from his veins. It was implied that Gyutaro doesn't run out of blood due to his regenerative abilities, giving him a virtually infinite source of blood to fuel his techniques. In combat, he usually created barrages of solidified sickle-shaped projectiles as sharp as blades that can travel at immensely fast speeds to attack his opponents. Gyutaro was capable of freely manipulating these blood slashes at will, altering their movements until they hit his opponent or shaping them however he pleased. Furthermore, his blood sickles were coated in poison, making them even more dangerous as the damage they cause was worsened by the effects of the poison.
Gyutaro could use his Blood Demon Art tactically to create inescapable attacks that can overwhelm Tengen and hold off the combined efforts of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. Moreover, the poison in Gyutaro's blood slashes appeared to be extremely deadly as Inosuke noted that a single scratch from them would be enough to kill him. The blood he manipulated was shown to be quite durable as well since Tanjiro deduced that his sword would shatter if he took the technique head on without deflecting it. Furthermore, Gyutaro could create a shield of blood in the form of a dome, which he used to protect himself from a barrage of kunai, further exemplifying its immense durability. More impressively, Gyutaro can create long-ranged circular torrents of razor sharp blood that can decimate the surroundings with ease without moving his arms.
Techniques :
Flying Blood Sickles (飛とび血ち鎌がま, Tobi Chigama) - Gyutaro releases multiple sharp and durable sickle-shaped blades of solidified blood by swinging his Kama. He is also able to control these sickles at will.
Rampant Arc Rampage (跋ばっ弧こ跳ちょう梁りょう, Bakko Chōryō) - Gyutaro flails around his Kama haphazardly and creates a dome of sickle-shaped blades of solidified blood around him that defend from incoming attacks. The blades spun so rapidly that they denied openings, and expanded outwards when finishing for good measure.
Rotating Circular Slashes: Flying Blood Scythes (円えん斬ざん旋せん廻かい・飛とび血ち鎌がま, Enzan Senkai - Tobi Chigama) - Gyutaro extends both of his arms, and unleashes circular waves of sharp solidified blood from his arms by rupturing his veins as he aims it directly at his target, although he can also merely rupture the veins on his shoulders to activate it. This technique requires little effort on Gyutaro's part, has massive range, and he is implied to even able to activate it as his head is being cut off.
Game Exclusive Techniques :
Blood Sickle Slash (血ち鎌がま斬ぎり, Chigama Giri) - Gyutaro unleashes two downward slashes followed up with an upward strike right after.
Flying Blood Sickles, Bend (飛とび血ち鎌がま・曲きよく, Tobi Chigama - Kyoku) - Gyutaro rapidly swings his Kamas to generate enough momentum to perform a cross-slash, launching a large, X-shaped projectile of solidified blood. The projectile moves slowly, and if it fails to hit it's target, it will linger and quickly track and home in on them.
Blood Sickle Onslaught (血ち鎌がま乱らん撃げき, Chigama Rangeki) - Gyutaro unleashes a wild flurry of blood slashes in a similar fashion as Rampant Arc Rampage before finishing it off with an X-shaped cut.
Rotating Circular Slashes, Flying Blood Scythes, Reap (円えん斬ざん旋せん廻かい・飛とび血ち鎌がま 斬ざん刈がい, Enzan Senkai - Tobi Chigama - Zangai) - Gyutaro throws his Kamas towards his opponent and catches it from behind while mid-air, before releasing a series of slashes followed up with an upward strike that launches them skyward. Then he unleashes Rotating Circular Slashes, Flying Blood Scythes into the air, creating two tornadoes of solidified blood slashes flying towards the target and devours them at both directions.
Poison and Obi Cross Slash (毒どくと帯おびの連撃れんげき, Doku to Obi no Rengeki) - Gyutaro launches several solidified blood scythes towards his target while Daki manipulates her sashes to create a smaller version of Eight-Layered Obi Slash using only four sashes. The result is the target being forced into the air by Gyutaro's haemokinesis, and subsequently slammed into the ground in a large burst of energy by Daki's attack.
Unshakeable Duo (最さい強きょうの二ふた人り, Saikyō no Futari) - Daki and Gyutaro simultaneously swarm their target up and around with obi sashes and solidified blood scythes respectively. After they bombard their target into the air, Daki jumps up while Gyutaro releases a violent storm of blood blades upwards. Daki then tangles the blades in her obi sashes, and uses it to create a whirlwind-like shape, which violently drills their target into the ground.
________________________________________________________
Flesh Kama: Gyutaro carried around a pair of Kama fashioned from his own flesh and blood, as such they are drenched with his poisonous blood. They served as his main tools in combat and are extremely durable and sharp, being able to easily cut through flesh and block attacks from Nichirin Swords with ease. They had a fleshy exterior and were blood red in color. Gyutaro briefly displayed the ability to move his Kama telekinetically, making it fly back towards him as if it were a boomerang. When he was a child, Gyutaro possessed a similar-looking Kama which someone left behind and was most likely his main source of inspiration for using a pair of Kama as a demon.

Trivia :
The word "Gyu" (妓夫ぎゅう, Gyū) refers to the barkers who would entice customers to enter the entertainment district. After working as a Gyu, he took the word and used it to name himself as Gyutaro, with "Taro" (太た郎ろう, Tarō) being a common ending for male names.
Gyutaro and Daki serve as dark foils to Tanjiro and Nezuko. While both sibling pairs endured poverty and hardship, Tanjiro and Nezuko found peace and love within their humble family life. In contrast, Gyutaro and Daki grew resentful, cursing those more fortunate than themselves.
Both sets of siblings lost their parents to illness. Tanjiro and Nezuko's father, Tanjuro Kamado, died of an unspecified disease but was remembered as gentle and wise. Gyutaro and Daki's mother, by contrast, died of syphilis and was abusive toward her children.
During the meeting with the Upper Ranks, it is revealed that Muzan only acknowledged Gyutaro as Upper Rank Six.
Gyutaro was one of Muzan's favorite Upper Ranks, since he highly valued his circumstance and greedy personality.
Gyutaro is one of the few known demons, the others being Rui and Kaigaku to use their human name as their demon moniker.
Since Gyutaro's mother died from syphilis, Gyutaro likely suffered from congenital syphilis, which occurs when a mother was pregnant while being infected. This would explain Gyutaro's ugly appearance, as the symptoms include deformed skeletal structures, crooked teeth, inflamed gums and blotches caused by rash.
In all officially translated material, Gyutaro's third Blood Demon Art technique is dubbed "Rotating Circular Slashes: Flying Blood Scythes", despite the second half its name sharing the same characters as his first, "Flying Blood Sickles". This may possibly be due to localization.
The official English translation of Chapter 96 by VIZ Media incorrectly attributes his age as 13 the day Ume was burned by the samurai, whereas the original translation, rectified in the anime, has Ume be 13 instead.
Gyutaro and Kaigaku are the only Upper Rank demons to never be shown interacting with Muzan. In his case, he's the only one of the original six (seven if counting Daki) to have this distinction. Coincidentally, both were Upper Rank Six and where first given blood by Upper Rank demons.
In Kimetsu Academy, Gyutaro, now given the surname Shabana, is an 18 year old high-school student. He's the older brother of Ume. Together with Ume, he is known to be the greatest delinquent siblings of the Academy and frequently cause troubles. Owns a motorcycle and often butts heads with Tanjiro's group.

History :
Human Life :
Gyutaro was born into poverty within the lowest class of the Entertainment District. His mother would often beat and try to kill him even before he was born due to a presumed attempted miscarriage since she could not afford to feed him. Given the fact that he was an unwanted pregnancy, Gyutaro was likely unnamed, and the boy would name himself Gyutaro after the name of his brief job as a gyu (a barker at the Entertainment District).
Throughout his childhood, he was berated for his appearance, voice, and poor hygiene by the other residents of the district. Without money and food, he was forced to eat insects and mice, which he killed with his only toy, a customer's forgotten sickle. When his sister, Ume, was born, he gained a sense of pride and acted as her "collector" within the district. He often protected his sister from their abusive mother, even physically assaulting her in retaliation to her trying to cut Ume's hair with a razor. This caused their mother to become afraid of Gyutaro, and she kept her distance until she died of syphilis, with Gyutaro not bothering to alert anyone, leaving her corpse to rot.
After Daki turned thirteen, he returned home from work one day, only to discover his sister tied up, burned to near-death, and left to die in a ditch because she blinded a samurai with a hairpin. Gyutaro assumed that it had been in self-defense against the samurai's advances, but in truth, Ume had attacked the samurai after he insulted Gyutaro. He jumped into the ditch and began to panic, tearfully demanding that his sister be turned back to normal while cradling her body, threatening to kill the gods while he did so. While embracing his dying sister, the same samurai whom she blinded appeared, snuck up behind Gyutaro, and slashed his back in an attempt to kill him.
He then overheard the samurai speaking to a brothel manager (Ume's madam), revealed to be the one who asked to have Gyutaro killed. However, before the samurai could kill them, Gyutaro managed to jump out of the ditch and kill the manager by stabbing her in the face with his sickle, much to the samurai's surprise as he turned to see the near-dead boy crouched over the woman's body. Gyutaro proceeded to ominously and sarcastically compliment the man for his lavish lifestyle, starting with his skin complexion and nice kimono before guessing that the man ate plenty, slept in a nice bed and lived in a nice house that protected him from the weather. During his rant, the samurai took a fighting stance and eventually charged Gyutaro to finish him off, but Gyutaro only criticized him for his extreme reaction to losing his eye before using his sickle to split the samurai's sword and then his face in half.
Despite being injured, Gyutaro carried his sister Ume's dying body throughout the Hanamachi district in search of help, but was ultimately hit with the hard and cruel truth that there was simply no one who would give aid to them, no matter where he went; they were constantly ignored by others and denied any mercy by anyone. He eventually succumbed to exhaustion, both he and Ume being on the verge of death. On the verge of death, they were found by the Upper-Rank Six at the time, Doma, who was searching the Entertainment District to devour the young women of the area.
He then offered to "help" them by turning them into demons, due to him being a "Nice Guy" and gave them a few drops of his blood to initiate their transformations. He then gleefully challenged them to become powerful enough to be chosen by Muzan and join the Twelve Kizuki themselves.
Demon Life :
As a demon he and his sister, now known as "Daki", continued to reside in the Entertainment District and continued to terrorize and feast on its inhabitants, with the siblings seemingly developing a taste of only eating from the district's finest and most beautiful tayūs and oiran of the district. After an unknown number of years, the siblings were eventually noticed and acknowledged by "that man" and given the rank of Upper Rank Six of the Twelve Kizuki. However, Muzan himself recognized that Gyutaro was the more powerful of the siblings, and acknowledged only him as the true holder.
Somewhere along his long life as a demon, Gyutaro successfully killed and ate at least fifteen Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps while his sister killed and ate seven.

Synopsis :
Entertainment District Arc :
After a tantrum-throwing Daki called out for him after being beheaded by Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui, Gyutaro emerged from her body, quickly taking her to another part of the room. He reattached her severed head, comforting her while doing so. Tengen attacked the pair, but Gyutaro quickly countered it, injuring the Hashira. He then complimented the Demon Slayer on stopping his attack.
The mysterious demon further complimented Tengen's face, skin, flesh, and height, as well as his presumed popularity with women. Feeling envious of the Hashira, Gyutaro threatened him with a painful death. Hearing Daki's complaints about Nezuko Kamado's involvement, he promised to exact vengeance upon all those who had hurt her. Throwing his sickle-like weapons with great force, which returned to him shortly afterwards, Gyutaro was unable to injure Tengen or the bystanders he was protecting.
He restated his envy of the Hashira, which only increased when the Demon Slayer revealed he had three wives. The mysterious demon unleashed his Blood Demon Art: Flying Blood Sickles, a barrage of blood blades. His attack accomplished nothing, as Tengen escaped through a hole he made in the floor, which surprised the emaciated demon. Gyutaro commanded his attack to turn, revealing its auto-tracking nature. Tengen deflected the attack again, throwing and then detonating several small bombs in Gyutaro's vicinity. Wrapped in his sister's sash, Gyutaro withstood the blast, smugly stating they are one.
The emaciated demon informed his opponent he was different from the previous Hashira he had fought, once again expressing his envy at Tengen's talents. He remained silent as the Sound Hashira rejected his claims, who cited Gyomei Himejima and Muichiro Tokito as examples of amazing talent, but countered by demanding to know how his Flying Blood Sickle's poison hadn't killed the Demon Slayer yet. Moments later, Gyutaro grinned, declaring Tengen's statement of poison resistance to be a bluff, and blocked the Hashira's twins blades with his dual sickles.
Clashing briefly with his opponent, Gyutaro was furious at Tengen kicking his sister. He was then surprised as Tengen threw more bombs at him and his sister, which he managed to escape unscathed. He quickly deduced the true nature of the bombs, special gunpowder capable of hurting demons, leaving him confident in their eventual victory, but was surprised as Tengen's subsequent sword strike extended. Marveling at the Hashira's grip strength, Gyutaro deflected the attack, but was left with a slight wound to his neck. He warned Tengen of his impending death, only to be surprised by the arrival of Inosuke Hashibira and Zenitsu Agatsuma.
The mysterious demon reiterated his death threat, believing the arrival of the Hashira's subordinates to be insufficient. Tengen remained confident in their victory, having deduced that cutting off both of the siblings' heads off at the same time was the key to success, but Gyutaro assured him it wouldn't be easy to accomplish. He also mentioned how he and his sister had eaten numerous Hashira, fifteen and seven, respectively. He then watched silently as Daki was taken onto the roof by Zenitsu, with Inosuke going to assist the towheaded youth in his fight, but remained confident that she would prevail.
Utilizing his connection with his sibling, Gyutaro closed one of his eyes, and quickly attacked Tanjiro Kamado. He nearly struck a blow to the youth's neck, but was thwarted by Tengen at the last second causing him to only stab him in the chin mere away from the fatal strike, and proceeded to exchange a flurry of blows with his opponent.
In the middle of this clash, sashes from his sister's conflict above them descended, prompting Gyutaro to call Tengen's claim of success to be a lie, as well as labeling his adversaries as incompetent for lack of movement control.[6] The Demon Slayers can be seen engaging in battle with the two demons of the Entertainment District, fighting ferociously on the rooftop and inside one of the brothels. As the building begins to collapse, Tengen finds himself getting cornered between two of Gyutaro's attacks however Tanjiro jumps in and manages to protect him from the slashes. Tengen proceeds to use Sound Breathing, Fifth Form: String Performance to try to corner Gyutaro, but Daki's obi interferes and protects her brother from the attacks.
Tengen begins to be pushed back by the obi, however Tanjiro moves in to cut the obi and tries to distract Gyutaro. Meanwhile on the rooftop, Inosuke and Zenitsu can be seen struggling as they try to evade the attacks from Daki's obi. The boys realize that Daki is know attacking them with the blood blades used by Gyutaro, making it impossible for them to approach her. Now that the brothel has been destroyed, Tengen and Tanjiro are left to fight Gyutaro and the obi beneath the night sky. On a nearby rooftop, Hinatsuru appears carrying a large box filled with kunai darts and proceeds to launch dozens of them down below onto Gyutaro.
At first he is left confused behind the random attack, but then Gyutaro utilizes his Blood Demon Art: Rampant Arc Rampage to deflect them away from him. Gyutaro is left shocked when Tengen proceeds to attack him despite getting pierced with the darts. He attempts to decapitate him with his sickle, however Tengen manages to evade his attack and successfully cut off his legs. At that moment, Gyutaro is struck on the neck by one of the kunai darts and fails to regenerate his feet, realizing that the darts were coated with wisteria extract. As his body begins to go numb, Tanjiro closes in on him to try to decapitate Gyutaro, leaving him seething with curiosity as the Demon Slayers quickly gain the upper hand.
However at that moment, Gyutaro manages to regenerate his legs and proceeds to attack them at a close vicinity. He uses his Blood Demon Art, Rotating Circular Slashes: Flying Blood Sickles to emit numerous blood slashes to attack them. Before they can reach him, Tengen Uzui grabs hold of Tanjiro and throws him back to protect him from the attack. Within seconds, Tengen uses Sound Breathing, Fourth Form: Constant Resounding Slashes to deflect Gyutaro's attack but finds that he has disappeared from sight. To his horror he looks up to roof to see that Gyutaro has managed to capture Hinatsuru and is about to kill her.
Tengen tries to save her however Daki's obi blocks him from reaching her. Tengen yells at Gyutaro to stop as he tries to push through. Tanjiro comes close to the building and tries to use the Hinokami Kagura to reach her however his body refuses to listen to him. Tanjiro quickly changes tactics and uses a form of the Water Breathing to quickly save Hinatsuru from Gyutaro. Realizing that he managed to save Hinatsuru, Tanjiro decides to utilize both the Water Breathing as well as the Hinokami Kagura in order to increase his attacking power. Gyutaro is left surprised by Tanjiro's unexpected maneuver and charges at him.
However at that moment, Tengen comes behind Gyutaro and swings his blade at Gyutaro's neck while openly yelling that he owes Tanjiro. Tanjiro assists Tengen by also trying to swing his blade down onto Gyutaro's neck, however the demon manages to use his sickles to halt both of their attacks and attempts to absorb their blades. Tengen uses his free arm to use his second blade to pierce the Gyutaro, but his quick reflexes allow him to catch the tip of the blade in his mouth. Sensing that Gyutaro is about to unleash more blood blades, Tengen tells Tanjiro to hang in there as Hinatsuru yanks Tanjiro away from them, allowing Tengen to leap off of the roof while pulling the demon with him.
As Inosuke runs away with Daki's decapitated head, Gyutaro suddenly appears behind him and impales him through the chest. Tanjiro looks on in horror as Gyutaro grabs Daki's head while Inosuke collapses on the roof, he then looks down on the ground and is once again horrified to see Tengen laying bleeding and unresponsive on the ground. Zenitsu tries to warn Tanjiro of the oncoming obi attack, but before he can escape, the roof collapses from beneath him and Tanjiro falls to the ground seemingly buried beneath the rubble.
Tanjiro awakens from his dream and tries to recollect his thoughts but before he gets up, Gyutaro can be seen standing over him, questioning if he's still alive. Gyutaro takes it upon himself to tell Tanjiro that Inosuke was pierced through the heart, Zenitsu was suffering and trapped beneath the rubble, and Tengen's heart had stopped due to the poison. He proceeds to refer to all of them as pathetic and asks Tanjiro how the demon in the box is related to him, and he responds by saying she's his younger sister. Gyutaro begins to laugh at Tanjiro's pathetic attempt to protect his sister and tells him he should be using his hands, before proceeding to break his fingers.
As Tanjiro withers on the ground in pain, Gyutaro proceeds to berate him for his weakness and pulls him by the hair. He teases Tanjiro and tells him to try to decapitate him, but instead of attacking him, he slaps his hand on a small bag and hangs his head down in defeat. Believing that he broke Tanjiro's fighting spirit, he reveals his grand idea of offering Tanjiro the opportunity to become a demon for the sake of his sister. Tanjiro suddenly looks up into the sky and Gyutaro asks him if he's trying to hold back his tears but to his surprise, Tanjiro responds that he had been preparing for the moment.
With his face gets close to Gyutaro's, Tanjiro brings his head down and headbutts him with a great force momentarily stunning him. Daki screams at him to get up but as his legs falter, and looks down to discover that a kunai dart has been lodged into his leg. Tanjiro manages to stand up while Gyutaro remains paralyzed and crouched before him, and uses his remaining strength to swing the blade down onto his neck.
Having regained his footing and subdued Gyutaro, Tanjiro manages to draw his blade onto Gyutaro's neck and press down to try to decapitate him. As he tries to force the blade down, Tanjiro envisions himself in Gyutaro's place and thinks that if he were in his situation, he would want his comrades to kill him before he could live as a demon. Tanjiro continues to struggle to try to cut through Gyutaro's neck but before he can do so, Gyutaro manages to emit his blood blades to repel his sword. Tanjiro is knocked off balance as Gyutaro regains his footing, causing them to reengage in battle. Gyutaro gains the upper hand and brings his sickle down onto Tanjiro's neck, however at that moment Tengen, regains his consciousness and protects him from the sickle.
Despite being severely poisoned and missing his left hand, Tengen engages in head to head combat with Gyutaro while remarking that he's perfected the Musical Score Technique. It is revealed that his technique allows him to analyze maneuvers of his opponents and read them like notes on a piece of sheet music. However the poison has hindered his attacking ability meaning that he can only defend Gyutaro's attacks.
Gyutaro manages to land a powerful attack to the left side of Tengen's face resulting in the loss of his left eye, and proceeds to stab Tengen. Tanjiro yells out to Tengen after witnessing him get stabbed, but Tengen orders him to ignore him and jump. Tanjiro leaps into the air towards Gyutaro and attempts to decapitate him, but is seemingly stabbed through the jaw by Gyutaro's sickle. The demon begins to panic as they gain the upper hand and pulsate his poison to try to kill Tanjiro, however he proceeds to endure the pain, and swings his blade towards Gyutaro.
It is revealed that the demon siblings were able to keep the Demon Slayers at bay through a hidden ability. During the battle, Gyutaro was controlling his sister and was able to see through her point of view, giving them the advantage. His poison also affected the Demon Slayers greatly, but there was always a member of the team that would slip through, allowing them to continue the fight. Tanjiro can be seen swinging his blade down onto Gyutaro's neck, despite the demon's sickle piercing through his jaw. His arm strength isn't enough to slice through his neck so he resorts to forcing his entire body to push through, ignoring the pain. Gyutaro notices the change in Tanjiro's scar as he develops a Demon Slayer Mark and his eyes roll back in his head. The change in his demeanor proves to be too great as Tanjiro's blade cuts through Gyutaro's neck, causing him to panic.
Meanwhile, Daki can be seen resisting Zenitsu's attempt to decapitate her. She attempts to use her obi to kill Zenitsu at close range, but Inosuke unexpectedly rushes up revealing that he protected his heart from being stabbed by rearranging his organs. He also reveals that poison has no effect on him since he was raised on the mountains, before proceeding to assist Zenitsu in decapitating Daki. The three boys let out a roar as they muster out the strength to slice through the Demons necks. After the long battle, Zenitsu and Inosuke manage to decapitate Daki up on the rooftop while Tanjiro can be seen decapitating Gyutaro simultaneously on the ground. Their heads fall onto the ground and roll around until they end up face to face.
As Gyutaro's body falls onto the ground, Tengen notices something being emitted from it and becomes alarmed. Meanwhile up on a nearby rooftop, Suma, Hinatsuru, and Makio have arrived to witness the end of the battle. As Makio begins to bicker with Suma over her behavior, Hinatsuru notices something is amiss down on the battlefield. She looks down to see Tanjiro struggling to breathe as he bleeds out from his jaw, while trying to slow down the poison. Tanjiro looks over at Tengen who's sitting down in front of him and yelling at him with a panicked expression. However, Tanjiro fails to comprehend his sudden alarm as Tengen looks at him with horror.
After the battle is over, Nezuko and Tanjiro search for the heads of the Upper Rank siblings. Tanjiro smells the scent of the demons and guides Nezuko to head towards them. When they arrive, Gyutaro and Daki can be seen viciously arguing over their defeat. Their heads begin to disintegrate as they blame each other for losing the battle, with Gyutaro degrading Daki for being useless. Daki retaliates by saying that someone as ugly as Gyutaro cannot be considered her relative, which leaves Tanjiro looking at them concerned about the hurtful words they are spewing at each other.
Daki and Gyutaro continue arguing as their heads begin to disintegrate, she starts chastising her brother for being useless and questions if they're even related. Gyutaro grows angry at her comments and calls her a weakling, even regretting protecting her in the first place. He loses his temper and goes on to spew hateful remarks such as mentioning that his life would've been better without her and wishing that she had never been born, causing Daki's eyes to well up with tears.
Tanjiro intervenes and covers Gyutaro's mouth, stating that he doesn't mean what he's saying and that they shouldn't spend their final moments fighting with each other. Daki begins to wail at Tanjiro out of frustration, yelling at him to leave them alone and stop lecturing them. Daki's head reaches its last phases of disintegration and she cries out for her brother to save her, saying that she doesn't want to die. Gyutaro hopelessly watches as her head dissolves away while still calling out him, before he impulsively calls out to her by her birth name, Ume; he then remembers how his sister's name was never "Daki", but instead "Ume", referring to "Daki" as a horrible name.
In his final moments, Gyutaro reflects on the numerous hardships he faced. He remembers that his life was always pain and misery, being born in a time when children weren't valued and having a hideous appearance in a place when beauty was a measure of worth. Though Ume's birth gave his life a new meaning, one where he prided himself in her beauty and his own ugliness gained him a new reputation as a brutal, monstrous debt collector, the ruthless immolation of Ume once again brought pain to his life, and the realization that their lives were never fair only hardened his heart towards anyone living better than them. He acknowledges that he will always be "the Gyutaro who collects" but is able to see that his sole regret in life was raising Ume into the person she became.
With his death, Gyutaro's spirit appears in the afterlife, where he is shortly after joined by Ume. Gyutaro repeatedly tries to force her away from him, seeing that it is the only way for her to move into a better life; he even denies that they were ever siblings and urges her to move to the light of the other side. Ume ignores Gyutaro's words and holds onto him, tearfully refuses to be apart from her brother and reiterating a promise they had to each other where they would never be apart again. Having accepted her wishes, Gyutaro enters the fires of Hell with Ume, slowly morphing back into his human form as his sister weeps.

Legacy :
Gyutaro and Daki's deaths were a major victory for the Demon Slayers, as it marked the first time in 113 years since an Upper Rank had been killed, and word of Gyutaro's defeat quickly spread to Muzan Kibutsuji and his archenemy, the current leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, who reacted with delight.
Muzan, enraged at the drastic change, then had Nakime summon the remaining Upper Ranks for a meeting, in which he addresses the death of Gyutaro, expressing his disappointment in his ability to kill the Demon Slayers sent to kill him. To this, Doma apologizes on his behalf as it was he who had introduced the demon to the Twelve Kizuki, happily offering to gouge his own eyeball as penance. Muzan ignores his offer and instead claims that Daki was a hindrance; had Gyutaro simply poisoned the Demon Slayers and left, he could have succeeded. He denounces the Upper Ranks by claiming they are no longer ranked by power anymore but by their remaining humanity, citing Gyutaro's love and care for Daki as an example, before then ordering them to fight in the future with more sacrifice and desperation.
Sometime after his death, Gyutaro's position as Upper Six was taken by Kaigaku, a traitorous transformed Demon Slayer and the former superior of Zenitsu.
When battling future opponents, Tanjiro used Gyutaro and Daki as a frame of reference; in fighting Upper Four Hantengu, Muichiro Tokito was able to decapitate him during their initial encounter. However, recalling that Upper Rank demons potentially may have further requirements to kill, as with the Upper Six siblings, Tanjiro warned him to stay on guard; he is ultimately proven correct when the decapitated Upper Rank began to split into different manifestations of his emotions. He later attempts to use the same method used against the demon siblings, simultaneous decapitation, to take down the clones, although it proves unsuccessful.
Later on, when Tanjiro manages to behead Upper Three Akaza, the demon's body stays active despite what should’ve been a fatal decapitation. Not knowing he had accomplished this due to his own willpower, Tanjiro wonders if he needed a special condition like Gyutaro and Daki to go down.

Relationships :
Daki :
Despite being hundreds of years old and losing all of his human memories, Gyutaro has a strong attachment to his younger sister, Daki.
Because their mother was abusive, Gyutaro spent most of his time as a human raising her by himself.
However, despite his love for her, he isn't above insulting her, calling her a weakling and telling her that, had it not been for him, she would've died a long time ago. In his final moments, Gyutaro viewed his way of raising her as his only regret. Later, when they were both in the afterlife, Gyutaro tried to push her away from him, showing that he wanted her to have a new start in life without him being a bad influence on her. However, Daki fully intended on making Gyutaro keep his promise to her.
Tengen Uzui :
Gyutaro despises Uzui due to his flashiness and having three wives. He attempts to murder Tengen in his battle and constantly mocks him for succumbing to his poison.
Tanjiro Kamado :
Gyutaro shows himself to be incredibly arrogant towards Tanjiro, mocking him for being unable to cut off his head or protect his sister, even breaking two of his fingers and mocking him for being weaker than Nezuko. However, he does admit that, although Tanjiro is "disgraceful", he doesn't dislike him, going on to say that he loves things that are disgusting and pitiful, even offering him the chance to turn into a demon and stating that, if he accepts, they'll be friends. However, Tanjiro refuses his offer. After managing to cut off Gyutaro's head, he witnesses, with visible shock, Gyutaro and Daki's argument. When Gyutaro tells Daki that she shouldn't have ever been born, Tanjiro covers his mouth and tells him how all they have is each other and that they shouldn't spend their last moments arguing with each other. After Gyutaro and Daki both pass away and venture into the fires of Hell together, Tanjiro wonders if they were able to make up.
Doma :
Doma was the one who turned Gyutaro and Daki into demons after finding them on the brink of death. Back when Doma was the Upper Six, he was in the entertainment district looking for women to consume when he came across Gyutaro with a slashed back carrying Ume, who was burnt alive, through the district. He then offered Gyutaro the opportunity to take his blood and turn the both of them into demons, and then become strong enough to reach Upper Moon, which Gyutaro accepts, and both he and Daki become demons and together take Doma's previous position as Upper Six.
