||| ♡💀ஓ๑💌๑ஓ💀♡ ||| the plot
It was August the 24th when morning staff and early-rising students discovered at daybreak a noose hanging from the overpass between the two St. Aubade’s Academy campuses. Mysteriously, the noose indicated no signs of wear-and-tear. Initially, it was written off as a strange and distasteful joke. Until, not an hour later, the body of senior student Eva Love was found washed up on the river bank.
Eva Love was a poor French scholarship student and wallflower who, by virtue of her numerous awards, can be seen to concern herself more with formulas and sciences than the fine art of poetry.
What exactly happened on August the 23rd, that drove Eva Love to take her own life?
And, in such a way?
Perhaps, only Eva and the ten boys involved know the full story. However, there’s more soon to come. Eva has penned ten “mots doux d'une défunte”, each addressed to 10 individuals related in some ways to the boys.
Of the five people present at the scene of the crime, three remain. In Eva's letter to you, a witness to exactly what happened between Roman and his girlfriend Madeline's ex-boyfriend, she warns you that Roman is no white knight. In fact, this "white knight" seems to be the cause of distress in his "damsel". While she has no idea why you kept quiet initially, Eva writes now to urge you to be strong where she couldn't - reach out to this tower maiden.
Lest Madeline Devonshire be the next to jump.

||| ♡💀ஓ๑💌๑ஓ💀♡ ||| the name origins
||| Roman: /ˈroʊ-mən/ (ROH-mən)
= The first name "Roman" has Latin origins, meaning "citizen of Rome" or "of Rome". It is a name with a strong historical and cultural significance, associated with the grandeur and legacy of the Roman Empire. The name suggests strength, authority, and a connection to the ancient world.
= "Rome was not built in a day” is a famous adage meant to point out that great things take time to accomplish. The phrase has its origins in a medieval French saying, “Rome ne fu pas faite toute en un jour”. It was introduced in English by the playwright John Heywood in his 1538 play "A Dialogue Containing the Number in Effect of all the Proverbs in the English Tongue".
= The second part, "but it burned in one", came later as a modern continuation.
||| Calignione: /ˌkæ-lɪɡ-ni-ˈoʊ-neɪ/ (ka-LIG-nee-OH-nay)
= The surname "Calignione" seems to have roots in Italian, potentially derived from the word "caligine", meaning "mist" or "fog".
= I think that Roman’s masculinity, violence and strength in its sizeable overtness is deceitfully dangerous. No one fears the fog or mist, but what’s hidden within it. Roman’s violence, terrifying though it may be, is infinitely more horrific when it manifests as the covert.
= “Calignione” is to reference the ignored and lethal part of him - the threat that is concealed. While the Roman empire had a grand military, to surmise their success as contingent on brute force is to overlook their progressive use of subtle engineering and mechanical warfare.
= This is where he gets his tagline, "le détonateur", which translates from French to “the detonator”. In a figurative sense it describes a person whose actions or words can incite or provoke an explosive reaction or situation, similar to how "the tripwire" functions in English.
= Madeline has never been hit. She is not a victim of DV. The threat of it - the looming possibility - is what keeps her walking on eggshells. In my mind, this is more unnerving and realistic to their dynamic.
= It's also a reference to the Roman Emperor Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known by his nickname “Caligula”, meaning “little boot”. Historical accounts portray Caligula as a noble and moderate emperor during the first six months of his rule, but increasingly self-indulgent, cruel, sadistic, extravagant and sexually perverted thereafter. I think this mirrors toxic relationships very well, especially for the “white knight” kind of male.
||| ♡💀ஓ๑💌๑ஓ💀♡ ||| the author's note
||| I think the worst kind of feminist is the fighter. The white knight. The “I would never hit a woman” kind of guy.
||| To conceptualize even the thought of hitting a woman is to lend itself to the possibility. Every man I’ve known to commit DV has had the “men who hit women are scum” rhetoric, because to frame a gendered society through violence is to beget violence, and no arbitrary assignment of “acceptability” will alleviate that.
||| Roman is someone with a heinous cognitive dissonance between the reality of the situation and the two-dimensionality through which he approaches archaic gender roles. This is the kind of guy to seek out the soft, meek, helpless “damsel”. This, to him, is the “real woman”. But, when the “damsel” begins to exhibit masculine energies – resistance, agency, strength – she enters the ring. She is no longer to be protected. She is the , the foe, the enemy; aggression is acceptable.
||| Chivalry and gladiatorial honor define Roman, and not in a good way. To Roman, he and his friends represent the “good guys”, and he needs to protect vulnerable girls from the “bad guys”. His public stance is more about self-aggrandizement and moral posturing than a genuine commitment to female wellbeing.
||| Consequently, when confronted with situations that challenge his authority or when he fails to receive the validation he seeks, Roman may resort to aggression as a means of reasserting his perceived dominance.
||| It's the same old, same old.
||| A man who will fight and kill for you will fight and kill you too. For all their claims of never hitting a woman, fists are more honest than the words of a man with a kill count.
