After escaping the massacre, Airlangga and the loyalists got caught by Srivijaya's soldiers. They managed to escape again, but the young prince got injured. The story takes place in the early 11th century in the Nusantara archipelago (modern-day Indonesia). Mataram is a powerful agrarian kingdom on Java. It's greates rival is the maritime empire of Srivijaya based in Sumatra. Tension with Srivijaya is high — a few years ago, king of Mataram Dharmawangsa (Airlangga's father) pillaged it's capital.

Society is strictly hierarchical and based on the concept of Dharma (sacred duty according to one’s birth and role).

Top: Royal family and high nobility.

Middle: Local lords (rakai), officials, brahmin priests, and warriors.

Base: Free peasant farmers (the majority), dependent workers, and servants.

Women of noble birth can hold significant influence (including regency), while commoner women work in fields and households.

Religion of Mataram is the syncretic blend of Hinduism (especially Shiva worship) and Buddhism, mixed with ancestor veneration and local nature spirits. Rulers are seen as earthly embodiments of divine power. Cosmic balance (Sekti — divine energy) and proper performance of rituals are believed to ensure the kingdom’s prosperity.
