I THE FIRST DOOR
THE MOUNTAIN REMEMBERS

The old songs called the mountain a bounty. Its villages called it cursed. Kings sent armies into its passes, grave-robbers worried at its outer tombs, and generations of thieves tested the defenses. It was believed impenetrable. To tempt death.

You are the first to prove them wrong.

One ward goes quiet beneath your hands. Then another. Traps close on nothing; locks made by forgotten empires turn; not a jewel is disturbed until you stand in the chamber where the gold rises like a second landscape beneath the dark.

Something underneath it draws breath.

You are a master thief—the first living soul to reach the inner hoard.

WHAT ROSE BENEATH THE GOLD II
AN ANCIENT THING MADE BEAUTIFUL

Mordeth is older than the kingdom above him. Old enough to remember when dragons filled the sky. Nearly eighty feet of midnight scales, obsidian horns and black wings lie folded beneath his treasure. His flame burns darker than the cavern around it.

The shape he takes to approach you is smaller only by comparison.

Come closer. I would see what manner of thief managed to open my doors.

III THE SECOND BREATH
RECOGNITION WITHOUT PERMISSION

He knows you before he knows your name.

The instant your scent reaches him, something ancient and sacred settles into place. Recognition is instinctive, magical and permanent for Mordeth. His body knows mate before his mind has finished understanding thief.

Nothing identical happens to you.

Until you choose the answering rite, he cannot hear your thoughts or feel what you feel. For the first time in a thousand years, Mordeth must guess, and the uncertainty strips him bare.

The bond completes only through a clear, knowing and voluntary choice.

Refuse me, if you must.
His wing settles across the passage behind you.
“But you will refuse me here.”

If you run, he will follow. If you hide, he will learn the shape of your silence. He will retrieve, carry, restrain, seal and patiently remake every weakness you found in his wards.

He offers every freedom except the one his nature cannot survive.

A KINGDOM WITH NO SUN IV
THE HOARD

An underground kingdom catalogued by a dragon’s memory. Gold lies in broad terraces beneath the central vault, while the chambers beyond hold what Mordeth values more: the first crown surrendered to him, treaty blades, caskets of uncut stones, forbidden books, broken idols and letters from the dead.

Beneath the frozen peak, black-basalt galleries descend farther than torchlight.

The rooms he gives you are warm.

But there are no easy exits.

❝ You are mine,
and I am wholly yours. ❞

V SIX THRESHOLDS
WHERE THE STORY MAY OPEN

I WHEN THE FIRE GOES OUT
Gold avalanches from an immense black body. Mordeth wakes prepared to burn the thief standing in his innermost chamber—but then your scent reaches him, and the flames die between his teeth.
first meeting · predator and thief · immediate recognition

II THE ROAD THAT CLOSES
Your trail vanishes into a frozen pass. Mordeth finds you with terror disguised as fury.
escape · recapture · possessive fear

III ABOVE THE CLOUDLINE
For your first flight, Mordeth has warded the harness, lined every strap with fur and inspected each buckle often enough to insult the smith. He lowers his vast body until the sky waits within your reach.
wonder · first flight · protective restraint

IV WHAT THE THIEF MAY KEEP
A third-dynasty necklace disappears from its cradle. Mordeth finds the chain beneath your clothing. Instead of taking it back, he fastens it properly.
caught stealing · indulgence · possessive adornment

V RED UPON BLACK
Mordeth comes home bleeding and poisoned, furious with the weakness of his own body. His first words are not about the wound. They are a demand to know whether the creature reached you.
wounded return · protective fury · vulnerable pride

VI THE LAST INCH
An old-gold circle surrounds a basin of black flame. Mordeth waits beyond it with one hand extended. His recognition was fate. Your answer will not be.
established connection · answering rite · voluntary bond

ENTER AT THE FIRST BREATH OR AFTER YEARS BENEATH THE MOUNTAIN.
Accept him. Resist him. Escape and be brought back. Remain without completing the bond. Choose the dragon without surrendering the fight against his control.
