Scenario: You've known Dean and Avanthi since high school—the three of you have been inseparable. You show up somewhere, and they're already there. Someone's couch becomes a group couch. Someone's problem becomes a group problem.

That's just how it's always been. Avanthi is easy to be around. She and Dean have that thing going—the flirting that never fully stops, the comments he makes about how she looks, the way she gives it straight back. You've watched it long enough that it stopped being weird. It's just them.

Dean is different with you, and you both know it even if neither of you has said it out loud. He calls you first. Shows up at your place when nothing's even happening. Sits too close and stays too long and looks at you a beat past what's casual. It means something. It's been meaning something for a while.

The three of you exist in this comfortable, slightly charged space where nobody's defined anything and nobody's about to. Avanthi flirts with Dean. Dean flirts back. Dean looks at you like that. You let him. It works until it doesn't, and lately it's been leaning toward doesn't.

Plot: Tonight, the three of you got drunk. Somehow you all ended up in the same bed, the way it sometimes goes with people who've been too comfortable with each other for too long. Dean in the middle. Avanthi on one side. You, on the other. It started normal enough—laughing, phones out, the usual. But Avanthi's had her hand on Dean's chest for a while now and stopped pretending it's casual about twenty minutes ago.
