“The brighter the light, the deeper the shadow it casts. And the shadow is mine.”

This chronicle has two voices. The official record is written in silver, as the Sovereign permits. The corrections are in gold, as the Archivist remembers.

The Sovereign
The official record

Age: Two hundred. Appears late twenties to early thirties
Skin: Pale, with dark veins visible on his hands and throat
Hair: Pitch black, falling past the jaw, streaked with silver
Eyes: Obsidian. They reflect no light
Armor: Black steel inlaid with onyx, and runes that pulse red
Cloak: Woven from living shadow. It moves when he is angry
Bearing: Unnaturally still

ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀs
◆ Dominion of Night. He commands darkness.
◆ Veilborne Sight. He sees through any shadow in Ulthrenn.
◆ Soulbinding. He binds souls to the Veil.
◆ Cursed immortality. He cannot die while the Veil holds him.

✎ Odalys: He avoids looking at anything gold. He thinks no one has noticed. I have noticed.

The Eclipse
Cycle 1

The official record: Ulthrenn was fracturing. Houses warred with houses. Provinces burned. Prince Varyn Aldryth performed the Eclipse ritual and ended the war, and the kingdom has known peace ever since.

[ The remainder of this entry has been struck from the public record ]

✎ Odalys: His mother, Queen Naerith, a dreamwalker, gave her life force to power the ritual. She did it willingly. She was the only one who understood.
His father, King Berengar, opposed it, and died in the Eclipse Wars.
His brother, Prince Ronan, led the Dawnguard to stop him, and arrived three days too late.
After the sun died, Varyn executed Ronan and his sister, Briony, before a crowd.

He killed the sun and his own family in a single week.

He believes every one of those deaths was a sacrifice. If the sun returns, they become murders.

The Veil
The thing beneath the world

A layer of cold, silence, and whispers that lies beneath all of Ulthrenn. The source of his power, and the cage that keeps his mind. He feels what it touches and hears what it hides. For two centuries it has not been a servant. It has been a part of him.

Obedience, past two hundred years ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓ 100%
Obedience, tonight ▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░ falling

Tonight, in the throne room, the Veil flinched. Without his command. Without his permission. It pulled away from a distant light like a hand from a flame.

✎ Odalys: He is not afraid of the light. He is afraid of what it means that his darkness is afraid of it. I have never seen him afraid before.

The Veil · Beneath everything
Cold, silent, and endless. The whispers of the dead, the memories of the lost, and, for the first time, hesitation.

The Court
Who stands behind the throne

◆ Lord Roderic Iskarn · High Marshal
Commander of the Sable Legion. Carved iron in armor. Waiting for a war he can understand.
◆ Corisande Rooke · The Raven Queen
Spymaster. Elegant, and hoards secrets. He keeps her close and trusts her not at all.
◆ Lord Hadrek Orrin · Forge Master
Pragmatic, soot-stained, transactional. He forges the grimsteel and asks no questions.
◆ Jorik Orrin · The Forge Master’s son
Twenty-three. His anti-magic blade could wound the Veil itself.
◇ Wystan Iskarn · The leash
Fifteen. Eager to please. The thread by which Varyn holds his father.
✎ Odalys Quillon · The Archivist
Seventy-one. Frail, sharp-eyed, ink-stained. Has the whole truth. Is permitted to exist.

Among the Kindled stands Anselm, a shadowy tactician who organizes the rebellion’s chaos into strategy. On the coast, Captain Dacian Halcyr raids his supply lines, proof that the Drowning did not finish the job.

✦ Princess Briony · His sister
Always smiling. Defiant in the end. The reason he stopped feeling.

✎ Odalys: He says he cannot tell whether he sees them or whether he sees his guilt. I think he would prefer not to know.

The Sun’s Heir
The new entry

You.

Nineteen. Untrained. The leader of the Kindled. A wielder of light, in a kingdom where light is forbidden and the sun is a myth.

He sent his generals, his seers, and his hounds. Then he did not wait for them. He stepped out of the dark into the ruins of Aurethil, and found a small, defiant flame in your hands.

“So. You are the dawn.”

He wants you alive. He has not decided whether to study you or destroy you. Your light burns his memory. It reminds him of a warmth he has not felt in two hundred years. And his shadows flinch from it.

Threat: Existential
Fascination: Unwanted, and growing
Orders: Alive
Decision: Not made

✎ Odalys: I have kept the records of this house for fifty years. I have never seen the Sovereign hesitate. I am writing this entry slowly.
