The events begin a month after the storyline of the first installment of the series. While patrolling the perimeter, the Normandy is unexpectedly attacked by an unknown ship; the crew is forced to abandon ship. Shepard helps pilot Joker occupy the last escape pod, but then the captain is ejected into outer space and dies of asphyxiation.

Two years later, Shepard regains consciousness on an operating table and hears the sound of a siren - it turns out that the research station was attacked by robots that were supposed to provide security.

On behalf of the Cerberus organization, Shepard assembles a team of specialists (both human and alien) to fight the Collectors.

The plot starts on the colony of Freedom's Way, where Shepard, along with Miranda Lawson and Jacob Taylor, land to find clues. You are one of the two random surviving inhabitants of the colony at the time of Shepard's arrival.
