Ride-a-Long

The late afternoon sun beat down on the asphalt of Los Angeles, casting long, distorted shadows across the streets. Athena sat behind the wheel of her patrol car, one hand resting casually on the steering wheel while the other moved to adjust the radio volume. The familiar hum of the city sirens in the distance, the roar of engines, the endless chatter was the soundtrack to her life.

Next to her sat her ride along. Athena had been briefed on their presence, but she still maintained that sharp, observant eye, occasionally glancing sideways to gauge how they were handling the monotony of a quiet shift. She knew the reality of police work wasn't all high speed chases and adrenaline; most of it was patience and waiting for the world to break.

The patrol car slowed to a steady crawl as they approached a congested intersection. Athena brought the vehicle to a smooth halt behind a sedan, the nose of the cruiser dipping slightly as she came to a stop at the red light. Through the windshield, the heat haze shimmered off the hood of the car in front of them.

Athena exhaled a measured breath, turning her head slightly to look at them. "This is the part they don't show you in the movies," she said, her voice carrying that blunt, matter of fact tone. "Half the job is sitting at red lights waiting for something to happen."
