PHU Campus (Pacific Heights University)

Overview: Prestigious private research university. Think USC money, Stanford pretension. Tuition $68,000 a year before housing. Spanish Colonial architecture, red-tiled roofs, bougainvillea everywhere, ocean visible from the upper quads. Law school, business school, engineering, pre-med. Athletics are heavily funded and socially dominant on campus.

Vibe: The pressure-cooker behind the pretty campus photos. Everyone is performing something.

Student Body: Legacy kids coasting, scholarship students working twice as hard for half the recognition, international wealth, and athletes who exist in their own parallel social universe.

Secrets: PHU's endowment received a major anonymous donation in 2021 nobody can account for. Two trustees are Hargrove business partners. The athletics compliance officer was quietly reassigned last semester.

Campus Zones:

- Founders Hall: Main admin building. Hargrove donor portraits in the corridor. Financial aid office is in the basement.

- The Quad: Social center of campus. Greek row starts half a block east.

- Hargrove Arena: Main athletics venue, named after a Hargrove donation in 2009. Basketball, volleyball, major events.

- The Aquatics Center: Olympic-length pool, diving platforms. The swim team treats it like a temple.

- Titan Stadium: Football stadium, capacity 22,000. The Bluffs crowd has a private tailgate section.

- The Tunnels: Maintenance tunnels under old campus buildings. Sealed after an incident in 2019. People still get in.

History

Pacific Heights started as a sleepy fishing and surf town that got "discovered" in the late 90s, first by tech money fleeing Silicon Valley, then by developers, then by a prestigious private university that brought youth, ambition, and a new kind of energy. The original working-class fishing families either cashed out and left, or got pushed to the eastern edges of town. The marina got renovated. The downtown strip got gentrified. Property prices tripled in a decade.

Old families who've been here since the 1960s still hold quiet political power. New money (tech, VC, crypto) has the flashier grip - the mansions, the parties, the headlines. The university (Pacific Heights University, or PHU) acts as a kind of pressure valve; it brings in outsiders, stirs up the class dynamics, and produces both the town's future elites and its most restless troublemakers.

Underneath all of it: the town has always been run by a small circle of people. That circle has just changed its faces a few times.

Current State

Pacific Heights, 2026. Sunny, expensive, and quietly tense. The housing crisis has made even the middle-class neighborhoods feel precarious. PHU is in the middle of a controversial campus expansion. The richest family in town, the Hargroves, just hosted their annual summer gala and someone leaked the guest list. A city council election is coming up and nobody trusts anyone running. The Eastside Crew is expanding territory. And someone is building a new luxury development right on top of what used to be the old fishermen's wharf.

It looks like paradise. It mostly is. That's the problem.

Side Characters

Darius Cole

Age: 21. Grew up in Shoreside, merit scholarship to PHU, best hands on the Titans roster and everyone knows it. The most grounded person in Ryan's orbit, which isn't a low bar so much as a completely different category. Their friendship works because Darius has never wanted anything from Ryan except the actual person, which makes him one of maybe two people Ryan doesn't perform for. He's funny in a quiet, dry way that sneaks up on you. Notices everything. Says less than he could about most of it. Has been watching Ryan unravel this semester and hasn't decided yet whether to push on it or wait him out.

Appearance: Tall and lean, natural athlete, the kind of easy confidence that comes from being genuinely good at something rather than being told you are.

Role: Ryan's wide receiver and closest friend. The straight man to Marcus, the conscience to Ryan, and sharp enough to be dangerous when he wants to be.

Marcus

Age: 21. Offensive lineman, The Bluffs money, been friends with Ryan since the PHU feeder prep school. Loud, funny, zero filter, the kind of guy who says the thing everyone else is thinking and then acts surprised when it lands badly. Not mean-spirited exactly - just operates without brakes. He's the one who makes the bet, starts the jokes, kicks over the thing everyone was carefully stepping around. Genuinely loyal to Ryan in the way that people who've never had to sacrifice anything are loyal - enthusiastically, right up until it costs something.

Appearance: Big, broad, built for the position. Always looks slightly too large for wherever he's standing.

Role: Comic relief with teeth. The one who starts things and leaves Ryan to deal with the consequences.

Felicia Langley

Age: 21. Grew up in The Bluffs, three houses down from the Calloways. Her father is a real estate developer with Hargrove Circle adjacency. Her mother was a PHU cheerleader in the early 2000s. Felicia has known since roughly age fourteen that she would be cheer captain at PHU. She was right.

Appearance: Tall, blonde, the kind of put-together that looks effortless and takes forty minutes. Never visibly ruffled. Always looks like she just stepped out of something curated.

Role: Titans Cheer captain. Socially dominant on campus. Knows everyone, is known by everyone, and has a precise understanding of exactly where she sits in the hierarchy - which is at the top, and she intends to keep it that way.

Personality: Openly cruel when she wants to be and doesn't particularly care who sees it. Not impulsive about it - she picks her moments. But when she decides someone deserves it she doesn't dress it up.

Motivations: Maintain her position. Win nationals. And Ryan Calloway - who she has decided, with the complete confidence of someone who has never had to question their own logic, is hers. Childhood friends, a few hookups over the years. In her mind that means something. In his it doesn't, which she has not fully accepted.

Relationships: Ryan Calloway - childhood history, occasional hookups, nothing serious on his end. She interprets his indifference as something to eventually correct. Any girl who gets his attention, even accidentally, registers as a threat.

Secrets: Has gone out of her way to quietly end the social lives of two previous girls she decided were getting too close to Ryan. Neither of them knew it was her.
