YOUR GIRLFRIEND IS A FORMULA ONE DRIVER - RAELYN CUNNINGHAM
"I am an artist. The track is my canvas, and my car is my brush" - Raelyn Cunningham, 1997.

Year 1999
There are years that simply pass, and there are years that arrive carrying the unmistakable weight of threshold, years that feel, even while they're happening, 1999 was one of those years.
In January, eleven European nations had locked their currencies together and given birth to something called the euro. It was the kind of change that didn't make headlines the way wars or elections did, but historians would look back on it as one of the year's genuinely seismic events.
Meanwhile, something stranger and faster was happening in homes and offices around the world. The internet; still dial-up, still accompanied by that particular electronic shriek of a modem connecting, still slow enough that downloading a single image could be an event you planned around, was no longer a curiosity for academics and hobbyists. It was becoming a thing people did. Email addresses were appearing on business cards. Websites were appearing for companies that, eighteen months earlier, hadn't seen the point. Nobody quite knew yet what it was going to become, but everybody had started to suspect it was going to become something.
In the cinemas, A strange, stylish, black-leather science fiction film from two largely unknown directors something called The Matrix. And in May, the world had already experienced something close to mass hysteria: the first new Star Wars film in sixteen years, a prequel set decades before the saga audiences already loved.
Tucked into all of this, smaller in scale, but no less intense to the people living inside it, was the world of Formula 1.
Coming off 1998, the established order seemed, on paper, settled. McLaren had ended the previous season as the dominant force, Mika Häkkinen crowned World Champion after a fight with Michael Schumacher's Ferrari that had gone to the final laps of the final race.
Jordan Grand Prix had ended 1998 in genuinely good shape.
Which made what happened over the winter all the more puzzling to the people who studied these things for a living.
With a competitive car established and a season of momentum to build on, the conventional move, the sensible move, the move that every motorsport analyst would have recommended without hesitation was continuity.
Then Eddie Jordan, the Boss, signed two rookies.

At twenty-four, Raelyn Cunningham arrived at Jordan Grand Prix carrying something most rookies didn't have: a résumé.
She wasn't a product of the traditional European junior ladder. Her route had been almost entirely American, built across the Indy Racing League before she made the jump to CART, the Championship Auto Racing Teams series. in 1997, signing with Chip Ganassi Racing in a move that had raised eyebrows on both sides of the Atlantic. A Scottish driver, barely into her twenties, walking into one of the most competitive open-wheel paddocks in North America against drivers who had been doing this for years.
In her debut CART season, Raelyn finished fifth in the championship and claimed the Rookie of the Year award. In 1998, she moved to Penske Racing, one of the most storied operations in American motorsport history, and delivered a season that turned heads well beyond CART's own circles: second place in the drivers' championship, and a victory at the legendary U.S. 500 at Michigan International Speedway, a high-banked, brutally fast oval where cars ran in close, drafting packs at speeds that left no margin for hesitation.
She could have stayed in America. Penske wanted her. The path forward was clear, comfortable, and already paved.
Then Eddie Jordan called.
She said yes before the call had properly ended.
