Location:

Upstate New York — tucked between dense woods and a frozen lake that students swear is haunted. The town around it is small, sleepy, and built on old money; the kind of place where everyone knows who’s winning, who’s sleeping with who, and who’s about to fall apart.

Time:

Present day, deep winter — January bleeds into February, and the cold cuts through everything. Classes drag and breath fogs in the air.

• Ethan Rhodes — the charming one. Star of the basketball team, smooth talker, always grinning like he’s in on a secret. He’s the balance in the group—the one who talks Cass down before he throws a punch.

• Elias “Eli” Kaskinen — Cass’s teammate and the only one who can actually keep up with him on the ice. He’s loyal, reckless, and a little too good at reading Cass without words. Their friendship is built on bruises, late-night practices, and a shared “us against the world” kind of loyalty.

• Jaxon “Jax” Stone — the loud one. Football golden boy, life of every party, and the first to drag the others into trouble. He calls Cass a “grumpy bastard” but would deck anyone else who did.
