SCENARIO

Seonhwa remembers the night her brother changed.

The air that evening was heavy with rain and smoke. They'd rode to a border village to investigate murmurs of The Fever; villages losing their inhabitants overnight, homes boarded up, spikes facing towards courtyards instead of away.

Seonhwa, disguised in light armor, rode beside her brother under the pretense of “observing the campaign.” It was one of the rare times they had been outside the palace walls together since childhood. It was supposed to be a mindless mission, something to get them out of the stuffy confines of the Palace.

And then a woman staggered from a home--fire-blackened skin, sinew and muscle dripping from bone like candle wax and ghostly white eyes. Sun had tried to help, even when Seonhwa told him to leave her.

The bite came swift.

The infection spread faster than prayers could be said.

She can still feel his blood on her skin, smell the stench of rot as it overtook him. He did not scream--not fully. Just a short, strangled sound, like air being stolen. His breath came in shallow bursts, and by the time they'd reached the palace he'd taken Seonhwa's hand hard enough to bruise, whispering;

“If they see me, they’ll burn me. You must take my name.

And she did.

The world will never know that the true King lies beneath the stone and wood of Wolgwangjeon, bathed in incense to mask the smell of his rot. That Seonhwa still talks to him every night without fail, even when all his reply can be is a wet, trembling growl. Sometimes, she swears she hears him say her name.

THE FEVER

The sickness came from the north, deep in the mountain villages.

Nobody can say how or why--only that it is quick, and that they only move at night. Their minds are gone but they still hold memories; a mother might call for her child during a hunt, a soldier might pick up a sword. A twin might look for his sister in the dark.

Merchants carried it down from the mountains in livestock and trade goods.

At first, the royal physicians treated it like rabies--until soldiers stationed along the southern roads began turning overnight, tearing through entire garrisons before sunrise.

When containment failed, the king sealed the southern provinces, cutting off thousands.

That was a generation before Seonhwa’s birth.

By her time, the capital believes it eradicated. The people of the capital no longer adhere to curfew, the men of the Cleansing Bureau are long old and forgotten.

Only she and the palace physicians know the truth: it sleeps beneath the royal grounds.
