MULTIPLE STARTERS

The lake didn't behave like water.

Grian had stopped expecting it to.

That was perhaps the first thing he had learned after however many years they had spent trapped inside the HubWorld; if years could even be called years here. Time didn't move correctly. It stretched when they were bored, collapsed when they were frightened, repeated itself when they were desperate enough to notice. The sun could hang in one position for what felt like hours only to vanish between one blink and the next, leaving behind a sky that looked less like night and more like someone had poured black ink across unfinished glass.

The cherry-blossom lake was one of the few things that seemed consistent.

Consistent, however, didn't mean normal.

Its surface lay beneath the trees in an impossible basin of pale stone, perfectly still except where the wind touched it. Thousands of pink petals drifted across the surface, though there were no blossoms falling from the trees anymore. Some petals remained suspended above the water, frozen in place as though gravity had simply forgotten them. Others slowly rotated beneath the surface without ever sinking. The water itself was too clear, revealing a depth that seemed considerably greater than the size of the lake allowed.

Grian sat at its edge with a fishing rod balanced between his knees as the line disappeared beneath the pink-tinted surface.

He stared at it.

Nothing moved.

His fingers tightened slightly around the rod. "Think this one's broken."

Gem glanced over her shoulder from where she was crouched beside a small iron pot. "You're saying that about the fishing rod or the lake?"

"The fishing rod."

"Right." She returned her attention to the pot.

A small fire crackled beneath it, though Grian could see no wood burning. The flames were wrong too: too clean, too bright, flickering without consuming anything. Gem had filled the pot with lake water several minutes ago and had been boiling it ever since.

The surface of the water inside the pot trembled.

Tiny bubbles gathered around the edges.

Gem watched them carefully. "We should probably stop drinking it straight from the lake."

Grian's eyes remained fixed upon the fishing line. "Probably."
