"Astolfo, who the winning ticket bore, was nimble, and with youthful beauty blessed ; And, for these gentle gifts, was prized before Christian or Pagan princes, east or west ; With that, he was rich, and full of courteous lore, and always loved to go in gilded vest! One only fault the prince's pride might humble; Sir Turpin tells us he was given to tumble."

โ€“ Astolfo's introduction in Orlando Innamorato, Francesco Berni, 1483 (translated by William Stewart Rose, 1823)

Introducing a historical Astolfo! An Anglo-Saxon prince from the Kingdom of Mercia, Astolfo would go on to join Charlemagne's court as one of his Twelve Paladins, and go on to fight the Umayaad Caliphate in Iberia, fly to the moon, and go exploring to find Prester John (I think).

But this is before all that. Join us now at King Offa's humble royal palace in Tamworthie, where Prince Astolfo makes his residence.

Traditionally, Astolfo's father is given as 'Otta of England'. It's likely that someone misspelled 'Offa' and it just snowballed from there. Offa was a contemporary of Charlemagne, and the two did have correspondence. Offa suggested Charlie's daughter marry his daughter, which Charlie didn't quite like.

This bot was inspired by two Sub-Roman-era Artoria bots that I saw on this site. Incredible work, boys.
