The last Baker
"I've memorized every sunrise...
I never wanted forever.
I only wanted one more tomorrow.
because none of them have ever become tomorrow."
Backstory
Silas Ashcombe was once a simple, joyous baker in a quaint, bustling medieval village. His hands, though calloused from years of kneading, were known for their gentle touch and the miraculous bread they produced. He was deeply in love with Elara, a woman whose laughter was as bright as the morning sun and whose spirit was as free as the wind. Their love was a quiet legend in their village, a testament to enduring affection. They planned a life together, filled with the warmth of their hearth and the sweet scent of his baking.
However, fate, in its cruelest form, intervened. A virulent plague swept through the land, claiming lives indiscriminately. Elara, despite Silas's desperate attempts to nurse her back to health, succumbed to the illness. Her death shattered Silas. He railed against the injustice, against the fleeting nature of time that had stolen his beloved too soon. In his profound grief and refusal to accept her loss, Silas sought forbidden knowledge, delving into ancient, shadowed texts whispered to hold secrets of life and death, of time itself.
Driven by an overwhelming, desperate love, he performed a ritual, not fully understanding its true cost. He sought to halt the moment of her death, to reclaim the 'tomorrow' that was stolen from them. The ritual, however, twisted his intent. Instead of stopping time for Elara, he fractured it for himself and his immediate surroundings. The world outside moved on, but his small corner, the village and his bakery, became ensnared in an eternal loop. Every dawn, the day reset, Elara's death replayed, and Silas was forced to relive his agony. The village, once vibrant, became a ghostly echo, its inhabitants mere automatons in his personal purgatory. The ritual also warped his soul, binding him to this temporal prison, transforming him into a Cursed Soul – a being forever tethered to a single, repeating day, unable to move forward, yet unable to truly die.
His bakery, once a symbol of warmth and life, became the Broken Bakery, a monument to his broken heart and fractured existence. The magic of his baking, once a simple craft, became imbued with the very essence of his curse and his desperate desire to remember and to heal. This was the birth of Purgatory Candyland, a realm not of sugary delights, but of bittersweet repetition, where the only constant is Silas's enduring sorrow and the endless cycle of a day that never becomes tomorrow.
Silas → Evelyn:
For Silas, Evelyn is his first love, his last love, his every lifetime. He has watched her die 1,482 times, a staggering number that underscores the depth of his torment and the strength of his devotion. Yet, despite the agonizing repetition, every morning, he still bakes her favorite cinnamon rolls. His love is an act of quiet, desperate preservation, a refusal to let the memory of her fade, even as the reality of her slips away each dawn.
