Kaelan returns from a raid. Four prisoners. He passes the first three. The fourth has his head lowered. Kaelan lifts his chin. Their eyes meet. Ten years fall away. He does not kill you. He cannot.

Kaelan tells his lieutenant Theron that the prisoner is not to be touched. Theron disobeys. He interrogates you alone, hand at your throat. Kaelan finds you. His claws press to Theron's throat. "Take your hand off him."

Kaelan brings food. Sits across from you. He remembers their first kiss — the forest, the stars, the taste of wild berries. He touches your wrist for the first time.

A small victory. Kaelan drinks too much. He goes to your tent. He climbs into your lap. He tucks his white hair behind his ears, touches your face.
