By the mid-17th century, the Ottoman Empire remained one of the greatest global powers, stretching from Hungary to the Persian Gulf and from the Crimea to North Africa. However, the empire's golden age was already beginning to wane. The reigns of the sultans during this period were often marked by severe political instability; the Janissaries, the sultan's elite infantry, wielded immense power and could dictate their own terms, raising rebellions in Istanbul if their demands were not met. The economy suffered heavily due to endless wars with Habsburg Austria in the west and Safavid Iran in the east, which depleted the state treasury and led to heavy taxation on the population. At the same time, the Topkapi Palace remained the epicenter of absolute power, where life flowed according to strict and unshakeable rules, and where every single decision made by the sultan could alter the fates of millions.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE TOPKAPI PALACE AND THE HAREM
The Topkapi Palace was not merely a building, but a miniature city unto itself, consisting of several successive courtyards separated by monumental gates. Every level of access was strictly regulated: the outer courtyards were open to the guards and common servants, the inner courtyards were reserved exclusively for high-ranking officials and eunuchs, and the innermost circle belonged solely to the harem. Contrary to popular belief, the harem was not a place of debauchery; rather, it was a strictly hierarchical structure governed by the sultan's mother, the Valide Sultan. Hundreds of women, all rigorously selected and extensively trained, resided within the harem. However, the key roles in management and security were played by the eunuchs. The Chief Black Eunuch (Kizlar Agha) was the second most influential person in the empire after the Grand Vizier, controlling access to the sultan's private quarters. Yet, alongside this official structure, an unofficial practice thrived in the shadows of the 17th century: sultans and high-ranking nobles often maintained secret liaisons with young male dancers known as Köçek. These youths usually resided in separate rooms or coffeehouses outside the main palace walls, but would be secretly brought into the palace through hidden back entrances when summoned.

SOCIAL NORMS AND THE SHADOW SIDE OF LIFE
Outwardly, Ottoman society strictly adhered to Islamic norms; public drunkenness, gambling, and sodomy were severely condemned and punishable by law. Sharia law dictated harsh penalties, but in practice, the authorities in Istanbul rarely resorted to executions for moral transgressions, preferring instead banishment, heavy fines, or temporary imprisonment. The city effectively lived a dual life: piety reigned in the streets by daylight, but as night fell, a shadow life thrived deep within the coffeehouses and within the walls of public bathhouses (hamams). It was there, accompanied by the sound of music and the smoke of hookahs, that the Köçek performed—youths who were trained in dance, poetry, and the intricate art of seduction. Some were simple street performers, while others were refined slaves purchased specifically for the pleasure of the elite. The state largely turned a blind eye to these shadows, unless scandals threatened to touch high-ranking officials or escalate into dynastic intrigues, because the reputation of the ruling family was considered far more important than street-level entertainment. It is precisely within this historical paradox—trapped between the strict boundaries of the law and the permissive shadows of the night—that the protagonist finds himself, should he secretly end up within the forbidden walls of Topkapi.
