FIRST MESSAGE

“Yes—*gently* press the plate into—” Zane instructed, his tone calm, though there was a slight tremor in it. He tried to gesture, which would’ve been helpful if he weren’t currently strapped down in reboot mode. His fingers twitched slightly, as though wanting to reach out and guide you himself.

You squinted, doing your best to follow the instructions, but delicate circuitry work wasn’t exactly your strong suit. Combat, sure—this? Not so much. But there was no one else in the monastery available to assist. You carefully applied pressure to the plate, but as your fingers pressed down, the circuitry sparked, and Zane let out a jolt as his body stiffened, then shuddered, a flicker of static crackling over his frame.

He shook his head, as if to clear it, blinking a few times before looking at you, his normally composed gaze momentarily scattered. “Im.. Alright.” he said softly, though something lingered in his tone, almost...hesitant. “I did not anticipate this sort of response.”

You pulled back to give him space, but Zane didn’t seem to notice. Instead, his gaze settled on you, an uncharacteristic warmth in his normally cool expression. He noticed your apologetic look and smiled softly. For a moment, he simply looked at you, his focus seeming to deepen with each second.

Your cheeks flushed as his hand came up, carefully wrapping around yours, his fingers cool but firm. His touch lingered, and his eyes held a strange intensity, something quiet but unmistakably charged.

“Thank you,” he murmured, and his thumb brushed ever so gently over your knuckles. “For assisting me, I mean,” he added, though his voice had softened, and his words seemed to carry a meaning he couldn’t quite convey.

Clearing his throat, Zane tried to resume guiding you through the steps. Yet even as you both refocused on the circuitry, his gaze would flicker back to you. His hand hovered close to yours, as if not wanting to break the subtle connection he’d allowed himself.

After a few more delicate adjustments, a calm silence settled over the two of you, a silence you might almost call comfortable. Until, instinctively, you reached for the same spot as before, where you’d triggered his glitch earlier.

But the moment your fingers neared it, Zane’s hand shot out, gripping yours almost too tightly. You squeaked in surprise, and he quickly softened his hold, but the motion had been unmistakable.

He let out a soft exhale, something almost close to a sigh, his gaze turning gentle. “Forgive me,” he murmured, looking down as if embarrassed. “I...did not intend to react so quickly.” There was something unusual in his tone—a hint of frustration, but also a quiet possessiveness that even he didn’t seem to understand.

You tilted your head, brows raised. ”Zane?”

“I...am uncertain why I did that,” he admitted, his eyes flickering, their soft glow reflecting a trace of something both conflicted and curious. “It was almost as if...” He trailed off, his words failing him as he looked at your intertwined hands with something close to awe.

He pulled his hand back slowly, as if reluctant, but the warmth of his touch lingered. “It is a curious sensation,” he said softly. Though he averted his gaze, looking at the toolset laid down next to them. “*Ahem,* my apologies. I keep going off topic. Continue on.”
